Arshdeep Singh Matches World Record With 39 T20I Wickets in 2026, Joins Elite List of Fast Bowlers

Arshdeep Singh Matches World Record With 39 T20I Wickets in 2026, Joins Elite List of Fast Bowlers

India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh achieved a major milestone during the third T20 International against New Zealand in Wellington on October 27, equalling the record for the most wickets taken by a bowler from an ICC Full Member nation in T20 internationals in a calendar year.

Arshdeep reached 39 wickets in 2026 after dismissing New Zealand opener Tim Seifert early in the innings. The achievement brought him level with Ireland’s Joshua Little, who claimed 39 wickets in 2022, putting the Indian fast bowler among the leading performers in the format.

The milestone came as India continued its five-match T20I series in New Zealand, with Arshdeep playing an important role in the team’s bowling attack.

Tim Seifert’s Early Dismissal Brings Arshdeep the Record

Arshdeep struck in the second over of New Zealand’s innings, removing Seifert for just two runs off six deliveries. The batter attempted an attacking shot but failed to control the ball, which went towards Axar Patel, who completed the catch.

The dismissal took Arshdeep’s calendar-year tally to 39 wickets, matching Little’s previous benchmark. Little had achieved his total across 26 T20I appearances for Ireland in 2022, while Arshdeep reached the mark in 30 matches during 2026.

The Indian pacer had already surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s national record of 37 T20I wickets in a calendar year during the second match of the series. Bhuvneshwar set that mark in 2022, taking his wickets across 31 innings.

Arshdeep’s latest achievement further underlines his consistency in international cricket’s shortest format.

Arshdeep Joins an Elite Group of T20I Bowlers

The calendar-year record highlights the performances of several bowlers who have enjoyed particularly productive seasons in T20 internationals.

Joshua Little set the benchmark with 39 wickets in 2022, while Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga also recorded 38 wickets in a calendar year. Arshdeep’s tally now places him alongside Little at the top of the list for bowlers representing Full Member nations.

The distinction is based on wickets taken during a calendar year, rather than a player’s overall career total. It therefore reflects a bowler’s sustained performance across international fixtures within a single year.

Arshdeep’s record is also notable because fast bowlers often face challenging conditions in T20 cricket, where batters regularly look to score quickly and attack from the beginning of an innings.

India’s Leading T20I Wicket-Taker Continues to Progress

Arshdeep has established himself as one of India’s key pace options in T20 internationals. His left-arm angle, ability to swing the new ball and variations at the end of an innings have helped him deliver wickets in different phases of matches.

He previously became the fastest seamer from a Full Member nation to reach 100 T20I wickets, achieving the landmark in 64 matches. He has also emerged as India’s leading wicket-taker in men’s T20 internationals.

His performances in 2026 have continued that progress, with the New Zealand series providing another opportunity to strengthen his standing in the format.

India Seal Series With Dominant Batting Display

Arshdeep’s milestone came during a match in which India defeated New Zealand by six wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

New Zealand posted 198 for three, with Daryl Mitchell scoring an unbeaten 89. India then completed the chase in just 13.2 overs, led by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 113 off 38 balls and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 45 from 19 deliveries.

The victory secured the series for India with two matches remaining. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Auckland on October 30.

Arshdeep’s achievement added an individual milestone to India’s series success. With further matches still to come in 2026, he has an opportunity to move beyond the existing calendar-year benchmark and establish a new record.
