Asian Games 2026: Satnam Singh and Salman Khan Win Bronze, Raise Questions Over Last-Minute Rowing Changes

Asian Games 2026: Satnam Singh and Salman Khan Win Bronze, Raise Questions Over Last-Minute Rowing Changes

Nagoya, September 24, 2026: Indian rowers Satnam Singh and Salman Khan secured a bronze medal in the men’s double sculls at the 2026 Asian Games, but their achievement was followed by strong criticism over the last-minute changes made to India’s rowing combinations before the competition.

The Indian pair clocked 6:13.25 at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course to finish third behind China and Uzbekistan. China’s Yi Xudi and Nie Yide won gold, while Uzbekistan’s Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov and Pavel Sorin took silver. India’s result marked the country’s first rowing medal at the ongoing Asian Games in this event.

Bronze Medal Followed by Frustration

Instead of focusing solely on their podium finish, Satnam and Salman spoke openly about the circumstances surrounding their participation in the double sculls event.

The two athletes had originally been preparing as part of India’s quadruple sculls combination. However, changes to the rowing programme and team combinations resulted in Satnam and Salman being paired together for the double sculls.

Reports said the changes were made only a few days before competition, leaving athletes with limited time to adapt to the revised line-ups. The sudden reshuffling had already created dissatisfaction within the Indian rowing camp.

Rowers Question Decision-Making Process

Following their bronze-medal performance, the athletes expressed the view that the late changes affected their preparation and medal prospects.

Reports quoting the rowers said they were unhappy with the way the changes were communicated and claimed that they felt significant pressure to compete despite their concerns. The allegations have brought renewed attention to the relationship between athletes and the rowing administration during the Games.

Their frustration was particularly linked to the belief that the original combinations had been developed through months of preparation and training. A sudden alteration meant athletes had to adjust their race strategy and coordination shortly before competition.

Federation Gives Its Explanation

The Rowing Federation of India has offered a different explanation for the changes.

According to federation officials, the rowing schedule was compressed because of weather-related disruption, reducing the competition programme from four days to two. Officials said the revised schedule made it necessary to reconsider crew combinations to avoid athletes having to compete in multiple demanding 2,000-metre races within a short period.

The federation has also stated that foreign expert coach Anthony Patterson was consulted while preparing the revised combinations, with the stated objective of maximising India’s medal opportunities under the changed schedule.

Satnam and Salman Delivered Despite Changes

Despite the disruption, Satnam and Salman produced a competitive performance.

The Indian pair remained in second position for much of the race before slipping to third during the final 500 metres. They eventually finished 3.88 seconds behind the Chinese gold medallists.

Their bronze was also significant because it came in a crew that had been assembled only shortly before the event, although the two rowers had already trained together for several months as members of the larger quadruple-sculls setup.

A Medal Amid a Larger Debate

The result has therefore become part of a wider discussion about athlete preparation, communication and decision-making in elite sport.

For Satnam and Salman, the bronze medal represents a major Asian Games achievement. At the same time, their comments have brought attention to the difficulties athletes can face when competition plans change shortly before an event.

The rowing controversy is now likely to remain a subject of discussion beyond the medal ceremony, particularly around how late team changes should be communicated and managed when athletes have already spent months preparing for specific events.

For now, the result on the water remains clear: Satnam Singh and Salman Khan have secured a historic bronze medal in the men’s double sculls, adding another significant chapter to India’s rowing campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.
