Bhuvneshwar Kumar Struggles on India Comeback as Dinesh Karthik Urges Patience After Costly T20I Spell

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Struggles on India Comeback as Dinesh Karthik Urges Patience After Costly T20I Spell

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to international cricket has proved more challenging than expected, with the experienced India fast bowler conceding 49 runs without taking a wicket in his first T20 International against New Zealand. Despite the expensive outing, his Royal Challengers Bengaluru coach Dinesh Karthik has backed him to recover, suggesting that nerves may have contributed to the disappointing performance.

The 36-year-old made his international comeback after an absence of nearly four years. His selection followed impressive performances in the Indian Premier League, where he played an important role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's consecutive title-winning campaigns in 2025 and 2026.

However, the opening match of the New Zealand series presented a difficult test. Bhuvneshwar struggled to maintain his usual control, conceding runs at an expensive rate and delivering two no-balls during his four-over spell.

India ultimately won the match by four wickets after chasing down New Zealand's total of 225 for four, but the bowler's performance became a major talking point.

Dinesh Karthik Explains Bhuvneshwar's Difficult Return

Karthik, who has worked with Bhuvneshwar at Bengaluru, acknowledged that the veteran pacer was below his usual standards but urged observers to consider the circumstances surrounding his return.

He suggested that the pressure of playing international cricket again after such a long gap could have affected the bowler's rhythm. Karthik also noted that Bhuvneshwar looked more comfortable during his opening and final overs, while the middle part of his spell proved more difficult.

The assessment offered a more measured perspective on a performance that attracted scrutiny because of Bhuvneshwar's reputation for accuracy and control.

The two no-balls were particularly unusual for a bowler known for his ability to control his line and length. Karthik cautioned that such mistakes should not become a recurring feature of his bowling.

His message was that one difficult appearance should not overshadow the experience and skills that helped Bhuvneshwar earn a return to the national team.

Strong IPL Form Earned the Veteran a Recall

Bhuvneshwar last represented India in November 2022 before receiving another opportunity for the T20I series against New Zealand.

His selection was supported by his recent performances in the IPL. He claimed 17 wickets in the 2025 season and followed that with 28 wickets in 2026, contributing to Bengaluru's back-to-back championships.

India assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak previously explained that the decision to recall the fast bowler reflected both his recent form and the experience he could bring to a relatively young bowling group.

Kotak also pointed to the importance of having experienced options available when Jasprit Bumrah is absent. He suggested that the conditions expected in New Zealand may have influenced the selectors' decision.

The recall therefore represented an opportunity for Bhuvneshwar to combine his knowledge of international cricket with the confidence gained from his recent domestic performances.

India Balance Experience With Emerging Talent

Bhuvneshwar's return comes as India continue to develop their next generation of fast bowlers while managing the workloads of established players.

Experience can help younger bowlers navigate difficult situations, particularly in high-scoring T20 matches where even small errors can quickly change the momentum.

At the same time, selection decisions depend on current performances and the team's requirements. Bhuvneshwar will need to demonstrate that he can translate his IPL form into consistent international results.

The team management has also emphasised the importance of building sufficient bench strength to maintain competitiveness across a demanding schedule.

A Chance to Regain Rhythm

Bhuvneshwar's first outing against New Zealand did not produce the impact expected from an experienced international bowler. Nevertheless, the backing from Karthik and the reasoning previously offered by the coaching staff indicate that his selection was based on a broader assessment than a single performance.

His ability to regain control, limit extras and execute his variations will be important in the remaining matches.

For India, the series offers an opportunity to evaluate whether the veteran can provide reliable support to the bowling attack. For Bhuvneshwar, it is a chance to rebuild his international rhythm and demonstrate that his recent IPL success can translate into performances at the highest level.
