Chennai: A skill development and workplace safety initiative supported by CREDAI CSR Foundation is gaining momentum across construction sites in Chennai, with more than 500 construction workers set to benefit from a 15-day training programme focused on technical skills, occupational safety and practical workplace learning. The programme is being implemented by Kivisory Skills Private Limited and is designed to strengthen workers’ capabilities while encouraging safer and more technically sound practices at construction sites.
15-Day Training Programme Focuses on Practical Skills and Safety
The initiative follows a site-oriented training model rather than relying only on classroom instruction. Workers are being trained in construction skills, occupational safety, correct use of tools and equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe working practices and hands-on practical demonstrations. The approach is intended to help workers understand not only the theory behind safe construction practices but also how to apply them during their regular duties.
So far, more than 250 workers have already undergone training under the programme, while another 200+ workers are currently undergoing training at DAC Developers’ project site in Chennai. At Newry Altura, Chennai, more than 140 workers successfully completed the training programme, marking an important milestone.
Training Connects Learning with Real Construction Sites
The site-based nature of the programme allows workers to relate training directly to their everyday work environment. Trainers Mr. Surender and Mr. Roshan Lal are playing an important role in conducting sessions and engaging with workers at different construction sites in Chennai. Their training approach combines technical instruction with practical demonstrations, helping workers understand construction-related risks and adopt safer methods of performing their responsibilities.
Safety Awareness Remains a Core Part of the Initiative
Workplace safety is a central component of the training. Sessions cover PPE, safe tool handling, working-at-height precautions, hazard identification, workplace discipline and correct work practices. The emphasis is on developing everyday safety awareness so that workers can identify potentially unsafe situations and respond appropriately.
The programme reinforces the principle that skill development and safety awareness should progress together. A worker who understands the correct use of a helmet, safety shoes, protective equipment or a particular tool is better prepared to carry out tasks responsibly. Similarly, awareness of hazards and unsafe practices can contribute to reducing workplace risks and creating a more safety-conscious construction environment.
Newry Altura Marks Completion with Worker Recognition
At Newry Altura, more than 140 workers completed the training programme and were recognised during a convocation ceremony. The completion event provided an opportunity to acknowledge the workers’ participation and the knowledge and skills gained during the training period.
After completion of the training, candidates were rewarded with an NSQF job role training completion certificate from CREDAI CSR Foundation, along with a T-shirt from CREDAI CSR Foundation. The formal recognition adds an important element to the training initiative by giving participating workers tangible acknowledgement of their successful completion.
Training Continues at DAC Developers’ Project Site
The next phase of the programme is progressing at DAC Developers, where 200+ workers are currently undergoing training at the project site in Chennai. Conducting the sessions within the construction environment enables trainers to connect technical lessons and safety procedures with the actual conditions workers encounter on the job.
This methodology also supports practical demonstrations and direct interaction between trainers and workers. By bringing structured training closer to construction sites, the initiative is helping make skill development more accessible to workers who may traditionally gain a significant part of their professional knowledge through experience and on-the-job learning.
Building a More Skilled and Safety-Conscious Workforce
With more than 500 workers targeted, 250+ workers already trained and additional batches continuing, the initiative represents an ongoing effort to combine skill development, safety awareness and practical experience within Chennai’s construction workforce. The involvement of trainers such as Mr. Surender and Mr. Roshan Lal Sahu, along with workers and project site teams, is supporting the implementation of the programme at ground level.
The initiative highlights the importance of treating worker development and workplace safety as interconnected priorities. Technical competence can help workers perform their responsibilities effectively, while safety knowledge can help them approach construction activities with greater awareness of potential hazards.
Through the CSR-led intervention, CREDAI CSR Foundation, together with training implementation partnerKivisory Skills Private Limited, is supporting a structured approach to skill and safety training for construction workers in Chennai. As further batches continue, the programme is creating opportunities for workers to strengthen their practical capabilities, receive formal recognition of training completion and develop stronger awareness of safe working practices.
