The box office witnessed an interesting clash on Friday as Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Daayra arrived in theatres alongside Kunal Kemmu and Preity Zinta’s Vibe. Both films entered cinemas with considerable attention, but their opening-day numbers remained modest.
According to early box-office estimates, Vibe managed to stay ahead of Daayra on Day 1, giving Kunal Kemmu’s film the stronger start of the two releases.
Daayra Box Office Collection Day 1
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Daayra features Kareena Kapoor alongside Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran. The crime thriller revolves around two police officers who find themselves facing a serious moral dilemma following a controversial encounter linked to a rape and murder investigation.
The film reportedly earned around ₹90 lakh net in India on its opening day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. It recorded roughly 12% occupancy across more than 2,200 shows.
The movie has been released in both Hindi and Malayalam, although the Malayalam version contributed only a small portion of the overall opening-day business.
Despite the presence of Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj, the film did not see a major rush at theatres on its first day.
Vibe Box Office Collection Day 1
Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe performed somewhat better during its opening day. The action-comedy, starring Kunal Kemmu and Preity Zinta, collected approximately ₹1.50 crore net in India, according to Sacnilk estimates.
The film was screened across around 3,194 shows and registered an overall occupancy of approximately 13.38%. Audience turnout improved as the day progressed, with evening shows performing better than the morning screenings.
Interestingly, the opening figure is similar to Kunal Kemmu’s directorial debut Madgaon Express, which also earned around ₹1.50 crore on its first day in 2024.
Daayra vs Vibe: Who Won Day 1?
Based on the available opening-day estimates, Vibe had the higher India net collection, with around ₹1.50 crore compared with Daayra’s ₹90 lakh. The difference was approximately ₹60 lakh.
However, first-day figures alone do not determine the complete theatrical performance of a film. Weekend growth, audience response, occupancy and the number of shows can significantly change the box-office picture.
Both films also entered theatres while established titles such as Hanuman Ansh and Mirzapur: The Movie continued to attract audiences, adding another layer of competition.
What Lies Ahead for Both Films?
The Saturday and Sunday collections will be important for both Daayra and Vibe. A stronger weekend could improve their theatrical momentum, while continued low occupancy would make it difficult to build substantial box-office numbers.
For now, the opening-day race has gone in favour of Vibe, but the final outcome will depend on how audiences respond over the rest of the weekend.
