New Delhi, September 26, 2026: A fatal road accident in southeast Delhi’s Sukhdev Vihar area claimed the life of a 45-year-old auto-rickshaw driver and left another man injured after an allegedly speeding car collided with multiple vehicles on Saturday morning.
The crash took place near Sukhdev Vihar Metro Station at around 7 am. According to police, the vehicle first struck an auto-rickshaw and subsequently collided with a cycle rickshaw. A PCR call regarding the accident was received at approximately 7:15 am.
Auto Driver Dies After Severe Collision
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Kalam, a 45-year-old resident of the New Friends Colony area. His auto-rickshaw was involved in the initial collision.
Following the crash, Kalam was taken to Escorts Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body was subsequently sent to the AIIMS mortuary for post-mortem examination as part of the police investigation.
The force of the impact left the auto-rickshaw severely damaged. Images and videos from the location showed extensive damage to the vehicles involved in the collision.
Another Man Injured in the Accident
The second person injured in the incident was identified as Mohammad Bablu, who lives in the vicinity of Sukhdev Vihar Metro Station.
According to the preliminary police account, the car hit the auto-rickshaw before striking a cycle rickshaw. Bablu sustained injuries in the subsequent collision and was taken for medical treatment.
The exact nature and severity of his injuries were not immediately detailed by authorities.
Eyewitness Claims Two Cars Were Racing
An eyewitness near the accident site told police that two cars were allegedly travelling at high speed and appeared to be racing shortly before the crash.
The witness claimed that one of the cars lost control and struck the auto-rickshaw before hitting the cycle rickshaw. He further alleged that several people inside the car left the vehicle after the collision and fled in another car.
However, the claim that the vehicles were racing remains an eyewitness allegation and has not been independently established by police. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Driver Allegedly Leaves Damaged Car Behind
The car involved in the accident was found at the scene after the collision. Reports identified it as a Hyundai i20 with Delhi registration.
The vehicle had sustained substantial damage, including damage to its front section and windshield. Police and forensic teams examined the scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
In later developments reported on Saturday, police said the suspected driver had been traced and arrested. The investigation is continuing to establish the complete sequence of events leading to the crash.
CCTV Footage Being Examined
Investigators are examining CCTV recordings from cameras installed around Sukhdev Vihar and the metro station area.
The footage is expected to help investigators establish the movement of the vehicles before the collision and determine what happened immediately after the crash. Police are also examining other evidence collected from the accident site.
A crime scene team and forensic personnel inspected the location following the incident.
Investigation Underway
The Sukhdev Vihar crash has once again highlighted the risks associated with high-speed driving on busy Delhi roads, particularly in areas where multiple forms of traffic share the same routes.
While police have established the broad sequence of the collision, the investigation will determine the precise circumstances, including the alleged speeding and eyewitness claims regarding racing between vehicles.
Authorities are continuing to examine evidence as the case progresses.
