In healthcare, professional excellence is often tested not only by clinical knowledge but also by the ability to remain composed, decisive and responsible when circumstances become critical. Dr. (Maj.) Aditya Sharma, Retd., is a medical professional whose career reflects this combination of medical expertise, military discipline, emergency response and public service.

With 12+ years of professional experience, Dr. Sharma has developed expertise across emergency medicine, military medicine, high-altitude medicine, sports medicine, public healthcare and telemedicine. His professional journey has taken him from demanding operational environments in the Indian Army to public healthcare services under the Haryana Government and medical responsibilities involving national sports teams.

From Military Medicine to Public Healthcare

Dr. Sharma’s professional identity has been shaped by his experience as a Medical Officer in the Indian Army, where healthcare delivery often required working under challenging operational conditions. His military medical service strengthened his ability to make timely decisions, manage emergencies and work effectively in high-pressure environments.

His experience in military healthcare subsequently became a strong foundation for his continued work in emergency medicine and public healthcare. Today, he serves as an HCMS-1 / Emergency Medical Officer with the Haryana Government’s Health Department, continuing his commitment to medical service and community healthcare.

A Defining High-Altitude Rescue Mission

One of the most significant milestones of Dr. Sharma’s career occurred in March 2017 in Arunachal Pradesh.

During a severe blizzard at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet, Dr. Sharma was involved in a critical rescue operation that resulted in the rescue and saving of 127 people.

The incident stands as an important example of emergency medical response in an extreme environment, where preparedness, teamwork, medical judgement and the ability to remain composed under pressure can directly affect human lives.

His military service has also been recognised through honours including the Sainya Seva Medal, High Altitude Service Medal and GOC Commendation Card for distinguished service.

Supporting Indian Athletes Through Sports Medicine

Dr. Sharma’s medical expertise extends beyond emergency and military healthcare into sports medicine.

In October 2024, he served as the Team Physician for the Indian Hockey Team during the India vs Germany international hockey match at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

He also represented the Indian Team as a physician during the BIMSTEC international swimming competition in Delhi in 2024, providing medical support in an international sporting environment.

His contribution to sports-related healthcare has also received recognition from the National Centre for Sports Science and Research (NCSSR), Sports Authority of India.

Healthcare Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sharma contributed to healthcare through teleconsultation services within the Indian Army.

At a time when conventional access to healthcare was significantly disrupted, teleconsultation became an important mechanism for providing medical guidance remotely. His involvement reflects the adaptability of his medical practice and his commitment to maintaining healthcare support during challenging circumstances.

Recognition in Healthcare and Professional Service

Dr. Sharma’s professional contributions have continued to receive recognition beyond his military career.

In January 2026, he was recognised as Healthcare Icon of the Year 2026 at the Global Healthcare and Wellness Awards & Conference in Hyderabad. He was also recognised with a Global Healthcare Award by TIAF in Delhi in 2026.

These recognitions complement the military honours and sports-healthcare recognition he has received throughout his professional journey.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Medicine

Dr. Sharma’s career demonstrates how medical expertise can extend across multiple healthcare environments.

His professional areas include:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Military Medicine
  • High-Altitude Medicine
  • Sports Medicine
  • Public Healthcare
  • Emergency Medical Response
  • Telemedicine and Teleconsultation
  • Medical Support for Athletes
  • Crisis Medical Management

This multidisciplinary exposure has allowed him to work in situations ranging from high-altitude emergency operations to athlete healthcare and public medical services.

Leadership Rooted in Discipline and Responsibility

A central element of Dr. Sharma’s professional philosophy is the belief that healthcare leadership requires more than technical competence.

His approach is built around discipline, preparation, teamwork, accountability, empathy and timely decision-making. His military background reinforced the importance of remaining calm under pressure and taking decisive action when circumstances demand it.

As he puts it:

“In medicine, true service means being prepared to act when it matters most, especially when someone’s life depends on it.”

Continuing a Commitment to Public Service

Following his military service, Dr. Sharma continued his healthcare career through the Haryana Government’s Health Department, where he currently works as an Emergency Medical Officer.

His current professional focus combines emergency healthcare and public service, while his wider experience in sports medicine, military medicine and telemedicine continues to inform his approach to healthcare delivery.

Looking ahead, his professional vision remains focused on contributing to emergency medicine, public health, sports medicine and accessible medical services. He aims to apply his experience in military medicine and emergency response toward healthcare initiatives that can improve access to timely and quality medical support.

A Career Defined by Service

Dr. (Maj.) Aditya Sharma, Retd., represents a professional journey that connects military service, emergency medicine, sports healthcare and public healthcare.

From participating in a high-altitude rescue operation that helped save 127 lives to supporting Indian athletes at international sporting events, contributing to COVID-19 teleconsultation services and continuing his work in Haryana’s public healthcare system, his career has consistently centred on medical responsibility and service.

His story highlights an important principle of healthcare: expertise matters, but the ability to apply that expertise when people need it most matters even more.
