Finculators: How Charranjeet Singh Is Reimagining Financial Planning Through Flexible, User-Centred Calculations

Rethinking the Traditional Financial Calculator

Financial planning is rarely a straight line. People build investment portfolios at different stages of life, change the amount they invest, pause contributions, or stop investing after a specific period while allowing their existing money to continue growing. Finculators, a digital financial planning platform, takes a different approach by helping users explore flexible financial scenarios through simple, intuitive calculation tools. Yet many traditional financial calculators are designed around fixed investment patterns. Its philosophy is captured in the idea, “Pehle Calculate Karo, Fir Invest Karo.”

A Platform Built Around Real Financial Journeys

The core idea behind Finculators is straightforward: a calculator should follow the user's financial journey rather than forcing that journey to fit a predefined calculator format. The platform is designed to help users think through different possibilities based on their circumstances and financial decisions. This includes considering an existing investment portfolio alongside future investments, rather than looking at every financial decision as if it begins from zero.

Exploring What-If Financial Scenarios

One of the platform's key strengths is its focus on what-if scenarios. Users can explore questions such as what could happen if they invest for only three or five years, stop investing after a limited period, increase their investment later, or reduce contributions over time. They can also consider how an existing portfolio could potentially continue growing after new contributions stop. By bringing these scenarios together, Finculators aims to make financial calculations more relevant to the way people actually approach long-term financial planning.

Existing Portfolios and Flexible Investment Periods

Not every investor follows a continuous 20- or 30-year contribution pattern. Someone may have an existing portfolio, invest additional money for a few years and then decide to stop future contributions. Finculators is built around this reality. Its flexible approach is intended to help users examine different combinations of existing investments, future contributions and investment durations, giving them a clearer way to understand possible outcomes before making financial decisions.

A UX-Driven Approach to Financial Planning

Behind Finculators is Charranjeet Singh, a Senior Lead UX Designer with extensive experience in understanding user behaviour, solving complex problems and creating intuitive digital experiences. His professional background strongly influenced the way Finculators was conceived. Rather than beginning with a conventional financial product concept, the platform emerged from identifying a user problem and approaching it through a UX-driven lens.

Charranjeet Singh, who works as a Senior Lead UX Designer at the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), identified this gap through his own experience of trying to understand different investment possibilities. His work in user experience and problem-solving led him to look beyond the limitations of conventional financial calculators. He recognised that people needed a tool that could reflect more realistic financial journeys, including existing portfolios, limited investment periods and changing contributions. This insight became the starting point for designing Finculators as a more flexible and user-focused financial calculation tool.

From a Personal Problem to a Digital Solution

The idea originated from Charranjeet's own experience with financial planning. While trying to understand the future growth of his existing investment portfolio together with future investments, he found that available calculators were often limited by fixed investment patterns. He wanted to test scenarios involving a limited investment period, stopping future contributions and allowing existing investments to continue growing. When he could not find a simple tool offering that flexibility, he decided to approach the challenge as a design problem and create Finculators.

Designing for Simplicity and Better Understanding

Finculators places user experience and simplicity at the centre of its proposition. Financial calculations can often feel complicated when users have to translate their real circumstances into rigid inputs. By encouraging users to explore scenarios that resemble their actual financial journeys, the platform aims to make calculations easier to understand and more intuitive. The goal is not simply to produce a number, but to help users examine the assumptions and possibilities behind that number.

The Philosophy: Calculate First, Then Invest

The broader philosophy of Finculators is reflected in its simple message: “Pehle Calculate Karo, Fir Invest Karo.” The platform is designed to encourage users to understand different financial possibilities before making investment decisions. As financial journeys become increasingly varied, tools that can accommodate changing contribution patterns, existing portfolios and different investment periods can provide a more practical way to think about future scenarios.

Building a More Flexible Financial Planning Experience

Finculators represents an effort to bring greater flexibility to digital financial calculations by starting with the user's real-world needs. Founded from a practical UX problem identified by Charranjeet Singh, the platform combines financial scenario exploration with a simplicity-first design philosophy. As more people seek digital tools that reflect their individual circumstances, Finculators aims to offer a calculation experience where the user's financial journey comes first—helping people explore possibilities, understand potential outcomes and calculate before they invest.
