A newly released video has brought fresh attention to the dramatic incident aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, where passengers reportedly prevented an alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft. The footage highlights a tense disagreement after passengers restrained the co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, following an attack on Indian captain Smit Machchhar.
The video, circulated by Israeli media, shows al-Hammami sitting inside the aircraft with his hands secured behind his back. Passengers can repeatedly be heard insisting that he should be handed over only to the police. Their repeated statements, including references to waiting for law enforcement, suggest that they wanted to ensure the suspect remained under control until authorities arrived.
The footage has raised further questions about the events that unfolded after the aircraft was brought under control.
Passengers Allegedly Dispute Crew's Instructions
According to accounts shared by passengers who participated in restraining the co-pilot, some members of the cabin crew allegedly asked them to release him. The passengers reportedly refused, arguing that the individual should remain restrained until he could be handed over to law enforcement officials.
Tzvika Manes and Daniel Schlichter, two passengers involved in the incident, described their experience in interviews with international media. They claimed that the crew's requests created confusion and increased their concerns during an already dangerous situation.
The passengers reportedly maintained that their intention was not to harm the co-pilot but to prevent any further threat and ensure his availability for investigation.
These accounts remain allegations from passengers, and the circumstances surrounding the disagreement have not been independently established through the available footage.
How the Mid-Air Emergency Unfolded
The incident involved Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling towards Tel Aviv when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit.
According to reports, the Indian captain sustained injuries but managed to open the cockpit door and alert others onboard. His actions allowed passengers and two off-duty pilots travelling on the aircraft to intervene.
Several passengers reportedly helped restrain al-Hammami, while the additional pilots assisted in stabilising the aircraft. The flight subsequently made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Reports indicate that approximately 174 people were aboard the aircraft, including children. Everyone was reported safe following the emergency landing.
The incident has drawn attention to the importance of emergency preparedness, cockpit security and coordinated passenger responses during aviation emergencies.
Indian Captain Smit Machchhar Receives Recognition
Captain Machchhar has received widespread recognition for his actions during the incident. Despite being injured, he reportedly managed to alert others and create an opportunity for intervention.
His response has been described as a significant factor in preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome. Indian authorities and political leaders have also acknowledged his courage.
Meanwhile, the co-pilot was taken into custody following the emergency landing and transferred to the United Arab Emirates for further investigation.
Investigation Continues Amid Unanswered Questions
Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including the suspect's background, possible motives and whether anyone else was involved.
The newly circulated footage has added another dimension to the investigation, particularly concerning the disagreement between passengers and crew members after the suspect was restrained.
However, the video alone does not establish the reasons behind the crew's alleged instructions or determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
The incident has also raised broader concerns about aviation security and the procedures followed when a member of the flight crew becomes a potential threat.
As investigations continue, further official findings are expected to clarify the sequence of events and address the questions surrounding one of the most unusual aviation emergencies involving an Indian pilot in recent times.
