India head coach Gautam Gambhir has shared his thoughts following India's 2-1 victory in the three-match ODI series against West Indies, acknowledging the team's performance while also appreciating the visiting side for its fighting spirit.
India entered the final match with an unassailable 2-0 advantage after winning the first two encounters. However, West Indies produced an impressive comeback in the third ODI, securing a five-wicket victory in New Chandigarh on Saturday.
Following the series, Gambhir took to social media to reflect on India's overall performance. His message highlighted the team's collective effort and included special recognition for the Caribbean players, who ensured that the series ended on a competitive note.
India Secure Series Despite Final-Match Defeat
Under Shubman Gill's leadership, India dominated the opening two matches of the series.
The hosts began with an eight-wicket victory in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, successfully chasing West Indies' total of 295.
India continued their strong performance in the second ODI at Guwahati, producing another remarkable eight-wicket win. The match became a memorable batting contest, with both teams crossing the 400-run mark.
Shubman Gill delivered an outstanding unbeaten double century, while Rohit Sharma also contributed a century. India successfully chased a challenging target of 406 runs, strengthening their position in the series.
However, the final encounter presented a different challenge for the Indian team.
Shai Hope Leads West Indies to Memorable Victory
West Indies demonstrated remarkable determination in the third ODI, chasing down India's challenging total of 351 runs.
India had posted 351/7 in their allotted 50 overs, with KL Rahul playing a crucial role by scoring an unbeaten 129.
The Caribbean side responded with an exceptional batting display led by captain Shai Hope.
Hope produced a magnificent unbeaten 162, guiding his team through a demanding chase. His innings combined composure, attacking intent and effective leadership under pressure.
West Indies reached 352/5 in 48.2 overs, completing a five-wicket victory with 10 balls remaining.
Although the result did not change the series winner, it provided West Indies with an important confidence boost.
Gambhir's Earlier Pitch Comments Add Context
Gambhir's latest message comes after his strong criticism of the Guwahati pitch used during the second ODI.
Despite India's convincing victory, the head coach expressed concerns about the lack of balance between bat and ball. He argued that cricket should provide opportunities for both batters and bowlers rather than becoming an overwhelmingly batting-dominated contest.
The second and third ODIs both featured high-scoring performances, making pitch conditions an important talking point throughout the series.
His response after the final match, however, focused on the broader achievements of the team and the competitive contribution of West Indies.
Positive Signs for India's ODI Campaign
The series offered several encouraging developments for Indian cricket, particularly the form of senior batters and the leadership of Shubman Gill.
KL Rahul's unbeaten century in the final match, along with the impressive performances of Gill and Rohit Sharma in the earlier encounters, demonstrated India's batting strength.
For West Indies, the final victory provided valuable momentum ahead of the upcoming T20I series against India.
Gambhir's message also reflected an important aspect of international cricket: recognising an opponent's performance even after securing a series victory.
With India winning the series 2-1, the focus now shifts towards the next chapter of the India-West Indies rivalry.
