The countdown to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 has entered a major phase with the tournament schedule being unveiled in Cape Town on October 1, 2026. The next edition of cricket’s premier 50-over competition will bring together 14 teams across three African nations, marking the tournament’s return to the continent after 24 years.
The competition is scheduled to begin on October 2, 2027, with the final set for November 21. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the event, which is expected to feature 57 matches at 12 venues.
Three Nations to Host the Global Cricket Event
The 2027 World Cup will be played across a wide range of venues in southern Africa. South Africa will host matches in cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and KuGompo City.
Zimbabwe’s host venues include Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, while Windhoek will represent Namibia. The tournament will also be a landmark occasion for Namibia, which is set to host its first senior ICC event.
The return to Africa is significant for international cricket. South Africa and Zimbabwe previously co-hosted the 2003 edition alongside Kenya. The 2027 tournament will give fans another opportunity to experience cricket across the region’s different grounds and playing conditions.
A New Three-Stage Tournament Format
One of the major talking points is the revised competition structure. Instead of following a straightforward group-stage route, the 2027 edition will use three stages before the knockout matches.
The tournament will begin with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams, from which one side will progress. The remaining 12 teams will then be divided into two groups of six.
Following the group stage, the leading teams will advance to the Super 7 phase. In this round, seven teams will compete for places in the semi-finals. The top four sides will qualify for the knockouts, followed by the final on November 21.
The format is designed to create more meaningful matches throughout the competition, while giving teams fewer opportunities to recover from poor performances.
India, Pakistan and the Qualification Picture
India is among the teams that have secured a place in the tournament. Other sides confirmed through the qualification cut-off include New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe also have automatic places, while the remaining four spots will be decided through the qualification process.
The India-Pakistan fixture will naturally attract considerable attention, given the history and global following of the rivalry. Fans will be watching the published fixture list for the confirmed date and venue of that match, along with India’s other group-stage assignments.
Ticket Registration Opens for Fans
The schedule announcement also marks the opening of the ticket ballot. Fans can register their interest during the announced application period, with entries considered through a ballot rather than being allocated solely on a first-come, first-served basis.
A successful ballot entry does not automatically mean a ticket has been purchased. Selected applicants will receive an opportunity to buy tickets within a specified period.
With the dates, host nations and competition structure now taking shape, attention will turn to team preparation and qualification. The 2027 World Cup promises a distinctive edition of the tournament, combining a new format with cricket’s return to Africa.
