India defeated the West Indies by 14 runs in the third T20 International at Holkar Stadium in Indore on October 11, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 69-run innings gave India a strong platform, while Arshdeep Singh led a disciplined bowling effort to prevent the visitors from completing another successful run chase.
Batting first, India posted 223 runs in 20 overs before restricting the West Indies to 209 for seven. The result provided a timely response after India’s defeat in Ranchi, where the Caribbean side had chased down a target of 250.
Arshdeep claimed three wickets, while Naman Dhir took two crucial scalps as India’s bowlers maintained pressure during the chase. The victory also demonstrated the team’s ability to defend a high total against an aggressive batting lineup.
Abhishek Sharma Sets the Pace With a Quickfire Fifty
India suffered an early setback when Sanju Samson was dismissed for three, but Abhishek quickly shifted the momentum with an attacking innings.
The left-handed opener scored 69 from just 30 deliveries, striking six fours and five sixes. His aggressive approach helped India accelerate during the powerplay and establish control over the innings.
Ishan Kishan provided valuable support, scoring 37 off 18 balls. The pair added 108 runs in only 40 deliveries, putting the West Indies bowlers under considerable pressure.
After Kishan’s dismissal, Tilak Varma contributed 28 from 16 balls. However, India struggled to maintain the same scoring rate during the middle overs, losing wickets through a combination of bowling pressure and running errors.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel added 21 and 20 runs respectively, helping the hosts keep the scoreboard moving. Prince Yadav also contributed a late burst of runs as India were bowled out for 223.
Roston Chase, Shamar Springer and Shamar Joseph picked up two wickets each for the West Indies, preventing India from finishing with an even larger total.
Arshdeep Singh Delivers at Crucial Moments
Chasing 224, the West Indies needed a strong start, but Arshdeep struck early by dismissing captain Shai Hope for five.
The visitors recovered through an aggressive partnership between Shimron Hetmyer and Kamil Pooran. Hetmyer scored 43 from 26 deliveries, while Pooran made 42 off 27 balls, briefly threatening to turn the contest in their team’s favour.
Naman Dhir changed the momentum by dismissing both set batters at important stages. His wickets prevented the West Indies from building the substantial partnership needed to sustain the chase.
Arshdeep then continued to trouble the batting lineup, finishing with figures of three wickets for 44 runs. His breakthroughs proved particularly important as the visitors attempted to accelerate towards the end of the innings.
Sherfane Rutherford added 32 from 20 balls, while Quentin Sampson scored 21 off 15 deliveries. Shamar Springer produced a late counterattack with an unbeaten 35 from just 11 balls, but the required scoring rate remained difficult to manage.
The West Indies finished on 209 for seven, falling 14 runs short of the target.
India Regain Control of the T20I Series
India’s bowling performance was central to the result after the team had failed to defend 250 in the previous match. Arshdeep’s early breakthrough, Dhir’s timely wickets and contributions from the other bowlers ensured the visitors could not sustain their chase.
The absence of significant dew also helped India’s bowlers maintain control during the second innings, allowing them to execute their plans more effectively.
Arshdeep was named Player of the Match for his three-wicket performance. India now lead the five-match series 2-1, with the fourth T20I scheduled to take place in Hyderabad on October 14.
The next match will give India an opportunity to secure the series, while the West Indies will need a stronger bowling performance and greater consistency throughout their chase to level the contest.
