Kimi Antonelli Targets Historic Formula One Title After Dominant United States Grand Prix Victory

Kimi Antonelli moved within touching distance of a historic Formula One world championship after delivering a commanding performance to win the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver said he hopes to secure the title in style as the championship heads towards its decisive stage in Mexico City next weekend.

Antonelli started from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday and converted his advantage into his ninth Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season. His latest success strengthened his grip on the drivers’ standings, although the championship battle remains mathematically open for at least one more race.

The Italian finished 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed third place. Mercedes teammate George Russell finished eighth, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fourth, preventing Antonelli from wrapping up the championship in Austin.

Antonelli Closes In on Formula One History

Following the race, Antonelli made clear that his approach would remain unchanged despite being so close to securing the biggest prize in motorsport.

The young driver said he wants to finish the season strongly and enjoy the remaining races rather than allow the pressure of a potential championship to affect his performance.

Antonelli currently leads the standings with 365 points. Russell sits second on 242 points, while Hamilton has 241, leaving the Mercedes driver with a substantial advantage ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix.

A strong result in Mexico City could make Antonelli the youngest world champion in Formula One history. The existing record belongs to Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 133 days old when he won his first title in 2010.

Antonelli could also become the first Italian driver to win the Formula One world championship since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat in 1953.

One-Stop Strategy Proves Decisive in Austin

Antonelli’s victory was built on a combination of a strong start, controlled driving and an effective Mercedes strategy.

The Italian immediately established an advantage after the lights went out, while Verstappen lost ground during the opening exchanges. Antonelli then maintained his lead as the competing teams adopted different approaches to tyre management.

Mercedes committed to a one-stop strategy, allowing Antonelli to extend his opening stint before switching to hard tyres for the remainder of the race. Several rivals made two pit stops, giving the Mercedes driver an opportunity to maintain track position and manage his pace.

The strategy ultimately delivered a comfortable winning margin. Antonelli praised the team’s execution and highlighted the importance of the decision to commit to a single stop.

The result was particularly significant for Mercedes after the team had experienced difficulties getting its recent car upgrades to deliver the expected performance. The Austin victory offered encouraging evidence that the team had made progress in understanding and improving its package.

Leclerc and Verstappen Complete the Podium

Behind Antonelli, Leclerc secured second place after a late battle with Verstappen. The Ferrari driver found a way past his Red Bull rival in the closing stages, while Verstappen had to contend with challenges during the race.

Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in fifth. Russell’s eighth-place finish left him with limited opportunities to reduce Antonelli’s championship advantage.

Although Russell and Hamilton remain mathematically in contention, Antonelli enters the next round as the clear favourite to claim the title.

Mexico City Could Decide the Championship

The Formula One season now moves to Mexico City, where Antonelli will have another opportunity to complete his remarkable campaign.

A finish inside the top nine would be enough to secure the championship regardless of Russell’s result. If Antonelli finishes outside the points, the outcome will depend on whether his closest rivals can win and reduce the points gap sufficiently.

For Mercedes, the upcoming race represents an opportunity to celebrate a breakthrough season for one of its most promising young drivers. For Antonelli, it is a chance to turn a dominant campaign into a record-breaking achievement.

His message remains straightforward: stay focused, deliver another strong performance and finish the season on a high.
