L Murugan’s Rajya Sabha Seat in Madhya Pradesh to Go to By-Election on November 12

L Murugan’s Rajya Sabha Seat in Madhya Pradesh to Go to By-Election on November 12

A by-election to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, previously held by former Union Minister L. Murugan, will take place on November 12, 2026. The Election Commission has announced the schedule, setting in motion the process to elect a new representative to the Upper House of Parliament.

The seat became vacant after Murugan resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership in October. His departure has triggered political discussions within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the selection of a candidate, with both Madhya Pradesh leaders and figures from outside the state being discussed as possible contenders.

The upcoming election is expected to draw attention to the BJP’s candidate-selection strategy and the political calculations surrounding representation in the Rajya Sabha.

Election Schedule and Key Dates

The election process will begin with the filing of nominations on October 26. Candidates will have until November 2 to submit their nomination papers, after which election officials will examine the nominations on November 3.

The deadline for withdrawing candidature is November 5. If the contest requires voting, polling will take place on November 12, followed by the counting of votes later that day.

The election will fill the remaining portion of the term associated with the vacant seat. Murugan’s original Rajya Sabha tenure was scheduled to continue until 2030, meaning the incoming member will serve the remainder of that term rather than begin a fresh six-year tenure.

The election is an indirect contest in which elected members of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly participate in choosing the Rajya Sabha representative. It is therefore different from a direct election in which citizens vote for parliamentary candidates themselves.

Why Did L. Murugan’s Seat Become Vacant?

L. Murugan, a BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, had represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha. He resigned from his membership in October 2026, leaving the seat vacant before the scheduled end of his term.

His resignation has also generated discussion about the future of his political responsibilities and the possibility of changes within the Union government.

The vacancy has created an opportunity for the BJP to select another candidate for the Upper House. The party’s final choice will determine whether the seat goes to a leader from Madhya Pradesh or someone from another state who is nominated through the state’s legislative electoral process.

BJP Leaders Emerge as Possible Contenders

Several BJP leaders in Madhya Pradesh are reportedly interested in securing the vacant Rajya Sabha seat. Among the names being discussed are former state minister Arvind Bhadoria, party general secretary Rahul Kothari, national media coordinator Ashish Agarwal, former vice-president Vinod Gotiya and state vice-president Shailendra Barua.

Former minister Ranjana Baghel has also been mentioned among potential contenders.

Vanathi Srinivasan, a former legislator from Tamil Nadu and former national president of the BJP’s women's wing, has emerged as another name in political discussions.

However, these names remain speculative. No candidate should be considered officially selected until the party announces its decision through the appropriate channels.

The BJP’s central leadership is expected to play a decisive role in determining the nominee. The selection could depend on organisational priorities, regional representation and the party’s broader political strategy.

Political Significance of the By-Election

The contest comes at a time when political parties are closely monitoring their strength in the Rajya Sabha, where numbers can influence the passage of legislation and parliamentary proceedings.

For the BJP, the vacancy offers an opportunity to maintain its representation while also considering the political advantages of its candidate choice.

The result will depend on the composition of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and the voting process prescribed for the election.

With nominations opening on October 26, attention will now shift to the BJP’s official announcement and the candidates who enter the contest. The November 12 election will determine who succeeds Murugan and represents Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the vacant term.
