Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has quickly shifted her attention to the next major challenge after producing one of the biggest achievements of her career at the 2026 Asian Games. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist is now targeting the 2027 World Championships, with the larger ambition of securing qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and improving the colour of her Olympic medal.
Borgohain's Asian Games campaign ended with a gold medal in the women's 75kg category. She defeated China's Bao Ziyi by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the final on October 2, securing the title on her 29th birthday. The victory also represented a significant improvement on the silver medal she won at the 2022 Asian Games.
The Asian Games title has strengthened her position ahead of the next stage of the Olympic cycle. Borgohain has indicated that her immediate attention is now on the World Championships, where a strong performance could provide an important route towards Olympic qualification. The 2027 World Championships are expected to be the first official qualification opportunity for the Los Angeles Games.
For Borgohain, the long-term objective is particularly significant because her Olympic journey has included both a breakthrough and a setback. She won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics but could not secure a medal at Paris 2024. Her latest comments underline her determination to return to the Olympic stage and aim for a higher finish next time.
The 2026 season has already been a major one for the Assamese boxer. Before her Asian Games triumph, she earned her first Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow, taking silver in the women's 75kg division. That result completed a major gap in her collection of international medals and gave her another boost before the Asian Games.
Her Asian Games gold subsequently added another major achievement to an already distinguished career. Borgohain became only the second Indian woman boxer to win an Asian Games gold medal, following Mary Kom's achievement in 2014. Her victory also demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure after a closely contested semifinal against Kazakhstan's Natalya Bogdanova.
The 2027 World Championships will therefore carry importance beyond another international medal. Borgohain's Asian Games success has given her a direct pathway towards the global event, allowing her to focus on preparation rather than going through the usual domestic selection route. A strong showing there could put her in an advantageous position in the race for Los Angeles qualification.
Borgohain is also looking at early qualification as a way to gain additional preparation time for the Olympics. Securing a place at Los Angeles at the first available opportunity would allow her to concentrate on long-term training rather than carrying the uncertainty of multiple qualification events.
With an Asian Games gold now added to her résumé, Borgohain enters the next phase of her career with renewed confidence. The immediate assignment is the World Championships, but the ultimate destination is clear: Los Angeles 2028, where she wants to turn her Olympic bronze into gold.
