Mumbai, September 22, 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against 10 food establishments in Mumbai following inspections that reportedly uncovered serious hygiene and food-safety violations. The enforcement drive comes ahead of the festive season, when demand for sweets, snacks and other food products typically increases.
Among the establishments facing licence suspension is Suleman Usman Mithaiwala, a well-known sweet shop located on Mohammed Ali Road. According to the FDA, inspectors found inadequate separation between food preparation and storage areas and drainage, sewage and waste-disposal zones.
FDA Conducts Special Food Safety Drive
The inspections were carried out between September 17 and 20 as part of a wider Maharashtra FDA campaign aimed at checking food establishments and preventing the distribution of adulterated, substandard or unhygienically handled products during the festive period.
Officials said the inspections covered food preparation facilities, retail establishments, storage locations and other food-handling premises. The action resulted in several immediate licence suspensions where officials identified conditions that could create food-safety risks.
At Suleman Usman Mithaiwala, officials specifically flagged the absence of adequate physical separation between areas used for food preparation and storage and nearby drainage, sewage and waste-disposal areas. The findings prompted the suspension of the establishment's food licence.
Other Mumbai Establishments Also Face Action
The enforcement action was not limited to sweet shops. The FDA also suspended the licence of a Swiggy Instamart dark store operated by Swinsta ENT Private Limited in Ballard Estate after inspectors reportedly found a live rat in a food-handling area, rodent-damaged rice bags, droppings and cockroaches. Flies were also reportedly found around food storage equipment.
An Amazon-associated warehouse operated by Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in Kandivali was also among the establishments facing action. Inspectors reportedly identified drainage and sanitation problems, damaged flooring and concerns regarding the separation of food products from cleaning materials.
Other establishments named in the enforcement action include Sadguru Sweets and Farsan Mart, Nice Enterprises, Jain Sweet & Bhelpuri House, Go Green Food Hospitality, Swad Snacks Corner, Lucknowi Kebab and Zaika Moradabadi Hotel.
Food Products Worth Rs 1.36 Crore Seized or Destroyed
The Mumbai action formed part of a larger statewide food-safety operation. Maharashtra FDA officials said approximately 32,023 kg/litres of suspected substandard, adulterated or unhygienically handled food products worth around Rs 1.36 crore were seized or destroyed during the drive.
The products included khoya, mawa, peda, ghee, edible oil, barfi, dried fruits, jaggery, sweets and other dairy-related products. The department also reported the seizure of 1,868 kg of suspected inferior-quality or improperly labelled tumeric powder worth about Rs 6.53 lakh from Miraj MIDC.
Focus on Food Safety Ahead of Festive Season
The latest action highlights the increased regulatory focus on food hygiene as the festive season approaches. Sweet shops, restaurants, warehouses, dark stores and other food businesses are likely to remain under scrutiny as authorities conduct inspections across Maharashtra.
The FDA's enforcement drive is focused on ensuring that food sold to consumers meets prescribed safety and hygiene requirements. Establishments facing licence suspension will need to address the deficiencies identified during inspections before resuming operations, subject to the applicable regulatory process.
