Veteran actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on Thursday, October 8, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. The acclaimed actor was taken to Manipal Hospital after being found unresponsive, but doctors were unable to revive him. He was declared dead at around 5:20 am.
According to details released by the hospital, medical teams attempted resuscitation for around 45 minutes. The circumstances surrounding his death have also led to renewed public attention on sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of knowing what to do when someone suddenly collapses.
What Is Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack, although the two conditions can sometimes be connected. A heart attack generally occurs when blood flow to part of the heart becomes blocked. Cardiac arrest, meanwhile, happens when the heart's electrical system malfunctions and the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively.
When cardiac arrest occurs, a person can lose consciousness within moments and may stop breathing normally. Because the brain and other vital organs depend on continuous blood flow and oxygen, the situation requires immediate emergency assistance.
Why Every Minute Matters
A person experiencing cardiac arrest needs rapid medical intervention. Without effective circulation, oxygen delivery to the brain and other organs falls sharply. The longer normal circulation is absent, the greater the risk of serious injury.
This is why early recognition, emergency medical assistance and resuscitation efforts are so important. CPR does not necessarily restart the heart by itself, but it can help maintain some blood flow until professional medical treatment and, when appropriate, defibrillation are available.
What Should You Do If Someone Suddenly Collapses?
If an individual suddenly becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, emergency medical help should be called immediately. If you are trained in CPR, begin chest compressions while waiting for professional assistance.
An automated external defibrillator, or AED, can also be valuable when available. The device assesses the heart's rhythm and, when appropriate, provides instructions for delivering a shock. AEDs are designed to guide users through the process, making them useful in public places where trained medical professionals may not be immediately present.
The key principle is speed: recognising a possible cardiac arrest and getting emergency help started as quickly as possible can make a significant difference.
Cardiac Arrest Can Happen Suddenly
One reason cardiac arrest is particularly dangerous is that it can develop rapidly. A person may have little warning before becoming unresponsive. In some cases, however, symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness or unusual palpitations can occur beforehand.
These symptoms should not automatically be assumed to indicate cardiac arrest because they can have several causes. However, severe or sudden symptoms involving the heart should always be treated seriously and assessed by medical professionals.
Nana Patekar's Death
Patekar's death has prompted widespread tributes across the film industry. The actor had a career spanning Hindi and Marathi cinema and was recognised for performances in films including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi and Welcome. He was also a theatre performer, filmmaker and recipient of the Padma Shri.
His death also highlights an important public-health message: cardiac emergencies can become life-threatening within minutes, making awareness of emergency response, CPR and AED use potentially valuable for people witnessing a sudden collapse.
