Nifty Surges Nearly 9% in Biggest Weekly Rally Since 2021 as Investors Gain ₹20 Lakh Crore

The Indian stock market delivered a powerful rally during the week ending November 6, 2026, as benchmark indices recorded their strongest weekly gains in more than five years. The sharp recovery boosted investor wealth by nearly ₹20 lakh crore, reflecting renewed confidence in domestic equities ahead of Diwali.

The Nifty 50 climbed approximately 8.6% during the week, while the BSE Sensex advanced nearly 8.8%. The gains marked the benchmarks’ strongest weekly performance since early 2021, reversing some of the pressure that had weighed on Indian equities in recent months.

The rally gathered momentum as foreign investors returned to Indian shares, corporate earnings offered encouraging signals and falling crude oil prices improved the market outlook. Indian equities also showed resilience despite a sharp sell-off in technology stocks across global markets.

Nifty Reclaims 25,000 as Sensex Crosses 81,000

Buying continued through Friday, November 6, extending the market’s winning streak to seven consecutive trading sessions.

The Sensex jumped 1,718 points, or 2.17%, to close at 81,028.02. The Nifty 50 advanced 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to settle at 25,030.35.

Both indices finished at their highest closing levels in more than eight months. The Nifty moved above the psychologically important 25,000 mark, while the Sensex reclaimed the 81,000 level.

The sustained advance helped lift the combined market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE to approximately ₹503 lakh crore. The recovery represented a substantial improvement in investor wealth following a difficult period for domestic equities.

Foreign Investor Buying Supports the Rally

A major driver of the market rebound was the return of foreign institutional investors (FIIs), whose selling had contributed to pressure on Indian shares during the preceding months.

Foreign investors made substantial purchases during the week, with provisional exchange data indicating that they bought nearly ₹15,000 crore worth of Indian equities on Thursday alone. This was their largest single-day purchase in more than a year, according to market reports.

The renewed inflows helped support benchmark indices, particularly large-cap stocks, which attracted stronger buying interest than several smaller companies.

Domestic institutional investors continued to book profits in parts of the market. However, sustained foreign buying helped offset some of that selling pressure and strengthened sentiment across major sectors.

Falling Crude Oil Prices Improve Market Sentiment

A decline in crude oil prices provided another important boost to Indian equities.

India imports a substantial portion of its oil requirements, making domestic inflation, corporate costs and the country's external balance sensitive to movements in international energy prices.

Brent crude prices fell sharply during the week amid easing concerns surrounding the conflict in West Asia. Lower oil prices can reduce pressure on India's import bill and support sectors such as aviation, paints and other businesses with significant energy-related expenses.

The rupee also strengthened during the period, benefiting from improved foreign fund flows and a more supportive market environment.

Together, softer crude prices, currency stability and renewed overseas investment helped make Indian shares more attractive to investors.

Strong Corporate Earnings Add to Optimism

Quarterly earnings also contributed to the recovery. Results from several major companies indicated that profitability was holding up better than some market participants had anticipated.

Financial services, technology and automobile stocks attracted buying interest as investors reassessed valuations following the earlier correction.

Large-cap companies led much of the advance, suggesting that institutional investors were favouring established businesses with stronger earnings visibility rather than aggressively buying across the entire market.

The earnings outlook will remain important in determining whether the rally can continue. A sustained recovery generally requires companies to deliver stronger profits alongside improving investor sentiment.

Indian Markets Defy Global Technology Sell-Off

The strength of Indian equities stood in contrast to sharp losses across several international markets.

US technology shares faced heavy selling amid concerns over artificial intelligence investments, valuations and the possibility of tighter regulation. Asian markets with significant exposure to semiconductor and technology supply chains also experienced substantial declines.

Indian equities proved comparatively resilient, partly because their recent recovery was supported by domestic corporate earnings, attractive valuations in selected large-cap stocks and renewed foreign investment.

This divergence encouraged investors to reassess how Indian shares compared with other markets facing uncertainty around expensive technology stocks.

Can the Market Rally Continue?

Despite the strong weekly performance, the sustainability of the recovery remains uncertain. Continued foreign inflows, stable crude oil prices, a firmer rupee and encouraging corporate earnings could provide further support.

However, renewed geopolitical tensions, a reversal in foreign investment flows or weaker-than-expected earnings could put pressure on stocks again. A sharp rally also does not guarantee that the market has entered a lasting upward trend.

For investors, the key factors to watch will be the direction of foreign fund flows, movements in crude oil prices and the ability of companies to deliver earnings growth.

The latest surge has provided a significant boost to market sentiment ahead of Diwali. Whether it marks the beginning of a more durable recovery will depend on how these economic and corporate factors develop in the coming weeks.
