Outside the Metros, India’s Gyms Are Going Digital One Front Desk at a Time

The next wave of Indian gyms is opening in smaller cities, and their owners are starting with the phone

Outside the Metros, India’s Gyms Are Going Digital One Front Desk at a Time

A few years ago, a gym “going digital” meant a desktop at the reception, a fingerprint machine and a software licence. In many of India’s smaller cities today, it means a phone.

Growth Is Moving Away from the Metros

IMARC Group expects India’s fitness services market to keep growing through the decade, with much of the new demand coming from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Nobody agrees on exactly how many gyms there are. Ken Research estimates about 46,500 fitness facilities, while a Rentech Digital count of business listings found 96,278 in April 2026.

The gap tells its own story. Many Indian gyms are small, owner-run spaces that never appear in formal data. They are also the gyms with the least time and money for administration.

Phone First, Hardware Later

For a new gym in a smaller city, the priorities are clear: collect fees, remind members and know who came in. All three can now start on a phone.

Most members already pay by UPI. Payment links let them renew from home, and UPI AutoPay can collect renewals on its own. Members read WhatsApp rather than email, and owners who use the official WhatsApp Business Platform avoid the risk of their number being blocked for bulk messaging. A QR code at the door replaces the attendance register, with members scanning in on their own phones.

Seeing Where the Money Comes From

Phone-first also applies to the accounts. On Torzil, an India-built gym management platform, the owner’s phone shows revenue split by type, such as membership, personal training and product sales, and by how it was paid: cash, UPI, card or online. In many smaller gyms, cash is still the largest share. Seeing that number every week is often what pushes an owner to offer UPI links and AutoPay.

When the Gym Grows

Hardware tends to come later, when the gym is busy enough to need access control. Fingerprint and face devices from brands such as ZKTeco and eSSL are common in India. The useful step is connecting that device to the system that handles billing, so an expired member is stopped at the door rather than chased later. A second branch is often the moment spreadsheets break.

What Small-City Owners Should Look For

Owners comparing tools usually want software that works fully on a phone for owner and staff, UPI and AutoPay that settle to the gym’s own account, official WhatsApp messaging, GST invoices at the current 5% rate, free help moving old member data, and support during Indian business hours. Torzil’s feature list covers most of these. Whichever tool an owner picks, the test is simple: does it save time at the front desk on a busy morning?
