PM Modi Completes 25 Years in Public Life, Reaffirms Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision

New Delhi, October 7, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 25 years in public service, marking a political journey that began with his appointment as Gujarat’s chief minister in October 2001 and later took him to the office of Prime Minister of India.

Reflecting on the milestone, Modi expressed gratitude to citizens and party workers while presenting the occasion as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with public service. He reiterated his determination to work toward the long-term objective of making India a developed nation by 2047.

From Gujarat to the Prime Minister’s Office

Modi entered elected executive office on October 7, 2001, when he became Gujarat’s chief minister. After more than a decade leading the state, he moved to national politics and became prime minister in 2014.

He subsequently secured two further mandates, making his current tenure the third consecutive term as prime minister. The 25-year milestone therefore covers a period spanning state administration, national governance and India's growing role in international affairs.

‘Viksit Bharat’ remains the long-term goal

A central theme of Modi’s remarks was the ambition of creating a developed India by 2047, the centenary year of the country’s independence.

The government’s Viksit Bharat framework broadly focuses on economic expansion, infrastructure, technological progress, social development, environmental sustainability and improvements in governance. Modi has repeatedly described the objective as a collective national effort rather than something that can be achieved by the government alone.

During his latest remarks, he again expressed confidence in the country’s ability to achieve the target, using the message “we will do it” to underline his determination.

Modi credits citizens and workers for the journey

Rather than presenting the 25-year milestone solely as a personal achievement, Modi highlighted the contribution of citizens, supporters and workers who have been part of his political journey.

He also reflected on the role of challenges and opposition in shaping his understanding of public life and democracy. His comments framed the experience of the past quarter-century as a continuing learning process.

The milestone comes amid a wider nationwide campaign centred on public participation and the Viksit Bharat vision. The campaign began in September and has included programmes focused on service, public engagement and development.

Cabinet resolution highlights governance record

The Union Cabinet also adopted a resolution recognising Modi’s 25 years in government. The resolution highlighted initiatives and reforms associated with his tenure, including welfare delivery, infrastructure spending, digital development, economic reforms, defence capabilities and scientific achievements.

It also pointed to India's international engagement and several major policy decisions as significant elements of the period.

Why 2047 is significant

The year 2047 carries particular importance in the government's development narrative because it will mark 100 years since India's independence.

The Viksit Bharat vision seeks to use the coming decades to strengthen India's economy and institutions while improving living standards and expanding opportunities. Modi has previously stressed that young Indians will play a major role because today's youth will occupy much of the country's workforce and leadership positions during this period.

The Prime Minister's 25-year milestone therefore coincides with another long-term political objective: preparing India for the next two decades of economic and social transformation.

A milestone that looks toward the future

Modi's completion of 25 years in public service represents one of the longest continuous periods of executive leadership by an Indian political figure in the modern era. His latest message places less emphasis on the anniversary itself and more on the years ahead.

With 2047 as the stated destination, the government is continuing to promote the idea that economic growth, technological advancement, public participation and institutional development must progress together.

For Modi, the completion of 25 years is consequently being presented not as an endpoint, but as another stage in a longer political and developmental journey toward the goal of a Viksit Bharat.
