PM Modi to Inaugurate Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor as CM Vijay Joins Historic Ride

PM Modi to Inaugurate Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor as CM Vijay Joins Historic Ride

Chennai, October 11, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the first operational section of Chennai Metro Phase 2 on Sunday, marking a significant step in the expansion of the city's public transport network. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is also expected to attend the programme, with the two leaders set to travel together on the newly developed metro corridor.

The inauguration centres on the 14.64-kilometre stretch connecting Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. The new section is designed to improve connectivity across Chennai's western suburbs, where population growth and increasing traffic have placed pressure on existing road infrastructure.

According to the Prime Minister's official itinerary, Modi is scheduled to take a metro ride between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass stations before attending other engagements in the city. The visit also includes the inauguration and dedication of development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore across several sectors.

New Metro Corridor to Improve Western Chennai Connectivity

The Poonamallee–Vadapalani section forms part of Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase 2, commonly associated with the network's Yellow Line. The project is intended to connect developing residential and commercial areas in western Chennai with the wider urban transport system.

The corridor has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore and includes a distinctive 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure. The infrastructure combines metro construction with other transport facilities, helping make use of limited urban space.

The opening is expected to provide commuters with an alternative to heavily congested roads and improve access to established transport hubs. At Vadapalani, passengers will be able to connect with the existing metro network through an interchange arrangement.

The corridor contains 17 stations, although 11 are expected to open initially. Six stations along the double-decker section between Porur Junction and Vadapalani will remain outside the initial passenger service arrangement.

What Commuters Can Expect From the New Line

The new stretch is expected to begin with trains operating at intervals of approximately 10 minutes. The initial service arrangement will use automated train operation technology, with train operators supervising services on board.

Although the trains are designed to support unattended operation in the future, fully driverless services are not expected to begin immediately. Further testing, validation and safety clearances are required before that operating model can be introduced.

The project is intended to reduce dependence on road transport and improve journey options for people travelling between western Chennai and other parts of the city. Its longer-term benefits will depend on service reliability, integration with existing routes and the opening of additional sections of Phase 2.

Passengers should check official Chennai Metro Rail Limited announcements for confirmed service timings, station availability and fare information.

Modi and Vijay to Attend Joint Public Programme

The metro inauguration will also bring Modi and Vijay together for a major public engagement. Their participation comes as the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre oversee infrastructure projects involving transport, highways, railways, ports and education.

The joint appearance is notable because the two leaders represent different political parties and governments. However, the inauguration itself is primarily an infrastructure event, with the focus on the expansion of Chennai's urban transport network.

Vijay's participation also places the state government at the centre of a project intended to address the transport needs of a growing metropolitan region. Coordination between central and state authorities remains important for the funding, construction and operation of large public infrastructure projects.

Chennai Visit Includes Projects Worth Over ₹13,000 Crore

Beyond the metro inauguration, Modi's programme includes several other development-related engagements. The announced projects span highways, railway infrastructure, port facilities, petroleum and education.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit the Brain Centre at IIT Madras and participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

The wider package is intended to support regional connectivity and economic activity while strengthening infrastructure across Tamil Nadu. The planned railway initiatives include the inauguration of five upgraded Amrit Bharat stations and the dedication of additional rail infrastructure.

Security and Traffic Arrangements in Chennai

Authorities have strengthened security ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, with arrangements covering key locations along the itinerary. Traffic diversions and restrictions are also expected around major event venues and roads used by the visiting delegation.

Commuters travelling through affected areas should allow additional time for their journeys and follow traffic advisories issued by local authorities.

The launch of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani metro section represents an important milestone in Chennai's long-term transport expansion. Its impact will ultimately be measured by how effectively the new service reduces travel difficulties, connects developing neighbourhoods and integrates with the city's existing public transport network.
