Rahul Gandhi Calls PM Modi ‘India’s Past’ Amid NEET Protests, Backs Students and Demands Education Minister’s Removal

New Delhi | July 26, 2026

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a strong criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday while expressing support for students protesting over the NEET issue. Addressing reporters, Gandhi described the protesting students as “India’s future” and claimed that no government could suppress their voice, while referring to Prime Minister Modi as “India’s past.”

The remarks came as demonstrations over the NEET controversy continued, with students demanding accountability and action from the government.

Rahul Gandhi Extends Support to NEET Protesters

Speaking to the media, Gandhi alleged that the government machinery was being used against students participating in the protests. He encouraged the demonstrators to remain united and continue their movement despite any pressure.

“This is the system that is attacking them. I told them inside: do not worry. No amount of strength from the entire Indian government—every single person in the government—can move you from there. Let them do whatever they want. If they want to stop or threaten you, they can try. We are not going to step back,” Gandhi said.

He further added that the students represent the future of the country and cannot be defeated by political power.

“They are the future of India, and no one can fight them. Narendra Modi is India’s past; the past can never fight the future.”

Demand for Dharmendra Pradhan’s Removal

Rahul Gandhi also reiterated the opposition’s demand for the immediate removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, arguing that the ongoing crisis requires accountability at the highest level.

He criticized the Prime Minister’s recent remarks regarding public suggestions on the issue and said the focus should instead be on addressing students’ concerns.

“This is not about suggestions; the demand is for Dharmendra Pradhan’s removal,” Gandhi stated.

Calls for Prime Minister’s Apology

In addition to seeking the Education Minister’s resignation, Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologize to the students, alleging that they had faced mistreatment during the protests.

“The main person in charge must apologize to these students, as they have been beaten, attacked, and disrespected,” he said.

Political Debate Intensifies

The statements have added a fresh political dimension to the ongoing NEET protests, with the opposition continuing to question the government’s handling of the issue. The protests remain a major national concern, drawing attention from political leaders, students, and educational stakeholders across the country.

The central government has yet to issue an official response to Rahul Gandhi’s latest remarks at the time of publication.
