Fresh political controversy has emerged within the opposition INDIA bloc after Samajwadi Party MP Shiv Pal Singh Patel made remarks questioning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli instead of Amethi.
Speaking about the electoral alliance between the Samajwadi Party and Congress, Patel claimed that Gandhi was initially unwilling to contest from his traditional political stronghold and required reassurance from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav before entering the electoral race.
Representing Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Patel also argued that Congress would have failed to secure any parliamentary seats in the state without the support of the Samajwadi Party.
His comments have attracted attention at a time when discussions surrounding seat-sharing arrangements and political coordination between the two alliance partners remain significant ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Patel Claims Akhilesh Yadav Persuaded Rahul Gandhi
According to Patel, Rahul Gandhi was hesitant about contesting from Amethi during the 2024 general elections. He alleged that Gandhi was prepared to withdraw from the electoral contest before Akhilesh Yadav intervened.
Patel claimed that the SP president encouraged Gandhi to participate in the election and indicated that his party would field its own candidate if the Congress leader decided not to contest.
He further suggested that Gandhi eventually agreed to contest from Raebareli following this intervention.
These statements represent Patel's account of the political discussions surrounding Gandhi's candidature. Neither the alleged reluctance nor the details of the conversation should be treated as independently established facts.
SP Credits Alliance for Congress's Electoral Performance
Patel strongly defended the contribution of the Samajwadi Party to Congress's performance in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
According to the official election results, the Samajwadi Party secured 37 parliamentary seats in the state, while Congress won six. The Bharatiya Janata Party finished with 33 seats, and the National Democratic Alliance secured 36.
Patel maintained that SP supporters transferred their votes to Congress candidates in constituencies allocated to the alliance partner.
He argued that the Congress's electoral success was closely connected to the joint opposition strategy and suggested that the party would have struggled without regional support.
Seat-Sharing Debate Adds Pressure to INDIA Bloc
The SP MP also made strong remarks regarding the distribution of seats between the two parties in future elections.
Pointing to the difference in their respective performances in Uttar Pradesh, Patel argued that the Samajwadi Party should have a stronger position during alliance negotiations.
He described SP as the senior partner in the state and indicated that Congress should avoid making excessive demands regarding seat allocation.
Patel further claimed that the Samajwadi Party would face limited electoral damage if the alliance ended, whereas Congress could struggle significantly without regional support.
Such remarks could complicate efforts to maintain coordination between opposition parties.
Congress Responds to Patel's Criticism
Congress leaders have pushed back against the SP MP's comments.
Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi criticised Patel's remarks and argued that his parliamentary position was connected to the collective strength of the INDIA bloc.
He also urged the Samajwadi Party leadership to ensure that its representatives avoid statements that could weaken cooperation between alliance partners.
The response highlights the challenges facing opposition parties as they attempt to balance individual political interests with broader electoral objectives.
Political Implications Beyond the 2024 Election
Patel's comments have brought renewed attention to the relationship between Congress and the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh.
Although both parties benefited from their combined electoral strategy in 2024, differences over leadership, political influence and seat-sharing could become important issues in future negotiations.
For the INDIA bloc, maintaining unity while accommodating regional political realities remains a major challenge.
Whether these public disagreements affect future cooperation will depend largely on how both parties manage their political differences in the coming months.
