New Delhi: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have spent years sharing the crease for India, and their understanding while batting together has often been an important part of the team's ODI campaign. With both experienced batters continuing to feature in India's 50-over setup, Rohit has now opened up about the conversations he and Kohli have during an innings.
Speaking ahead of India's ongoing ODI series against the West Indies, Rohit explained that their discussions while batting together are largely focused on reading the match situation and making the right decisions at the crease. Rather than having complicated conversations, the two experienced batters communicate about which bowlers to target, when to rotate the strike and how to build the innings according to the circumstances.
Rohit and Kohli Focus on Match Situation
According to Rohit, their communication is practical and centred around what the team needs at a particular stage of the innings. When both players are together, they assess the bowling attack and discuss opportunities to score while also identifying situations where taking a single is the better option.
The former India captain also shared a lighter aspect of their communication. He explained that when he is experiencing discomfort while running, he sometimes tells Kohli to be careful between the wickets. Such small exchanges have become a natural part of their partnership and reflect the understanding developed between the two players over many years.
Rohit indicated that this familiarity allows them to communicate quickly without needing lengthy explanations. Their conversations can change depending on the match situation, but the underlying objective remains the same — contributing to India's performance.
No Need to Explain the Importance of the 2027 World Cup to Kohli
Rohit was also asked about discussions with Kohli regarding the 2027 ODI World Cup. His response made it clear that he does not believe Kohli needs to be reminded about the significance of the tournament.
Kohli has already appeared in four ODI World Cups — in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 — and the 2027 edition is set to be his fifth. Rohit pointed out that Kohli's experience at the global tournament means he already understands what a World Cup represents.
Instead of repeatedly discussing the importance of the tournament, the focus for the two senior players remains on what they can do on the field and how they can contribute to the team's immediate objectives.
A Partnership Built Over Years
Rohit also spoke about how their relationship has evolved throughout their careers. Although the two players have different personalities and approaches to the game, he said their thinking when it comes to the team's objectives remains aligned.
Their shared focus is straightforward: win matches, perform well in the series and ultimately compete for major trophies. Rohit's comments also underline the level of familiarity that has developed between the two batters after years of playing international cricket together.
The duo's continued presence in India's ODI setup has naturally attracted attention as the 2027 World Cup approaches. For now, however, Rohit's comments suggest that their focus remains firmly on the immediate task rather than looking too far ahead.
With experienced players like Rohit and Kohli continuing to contribute in the 50-over format, their communication at the crease remains an important element of India's batting approach. Their conversations may appear simple, but decisions about attacking a bowler, rotating the strike and managing the running between wickets can have a significant impact during an ODI innings.
