New Delhi, September 23, 2026: Investors in government-backed small savings schemes are closely watching September 30, when the Centre is expected to announce interest rates for the October-December 2026 quarter. The decision will be relevant for popular schemes including the Public Provident Fund (PPF), Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), National Savings Certificate (NSC) and Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS).
The government reviews small savings interest rates every quarter. For the ongoing July-September quarter, rates were kept unchanged across the schemes. The Department of Economic Affairs' June 30 notification confirmed that the rates would remain at the levels applicable during the previous quarter.
Current Interest Rates Under Review
At present, the PPF interest rate stands at 7.1% per annum, while Sukanya Samriddhi and SCSS offer 8.2%. The National Savings Certificate carries an interest rate of 7.7%, while Kisan Vikas Patra currently offers 7.5%.
Other small savings products include the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme at 7.4% and Post Office Time Deposits, depending on the tenure, ranging from 6.9% to 7.5%.
These rates will remain applicable through September 30 unless the government announces a new structure for the next quarter.
Why September 30 Matters
The quarterly review is significant because any revision can affect the returns available on several government-backed savings products. The upcoming decision covers the October-December 2026 quarter, with investors watching for indications of either a continuation of the current rates or a possible revision.
Recent market movements have also brought attention to government bond yields, which form part of the framework used while determining small savings rates. A recent report noted that the 10-year government bond yield had moved higher between the end of June and September, prompting discussion over whether the government could consider a change. However, the final decision rests with the government and cannot be assumed before the official notification.
PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi Investors Watching Closely
PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi are among the most closely tracked schemes because they are widely used for long-term savings. PPF currently offers 7.1%, while Sukanya Samriddhi provides 8.2% annually.
Unlike products where the interest rate can be fixed at the time of investment for the specified tenure, rates for schemes such as PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi are subject to periodic government notifications. This means investors need to follow the quarterly announcements rather than assuming that the rate at the time of opening an account remains unchanged for its entire duration.
KVP and Other Post Office Schemes
Kisan Vikas Patra is another scheme under scrutiny ahead of the September review. Its current interest rate is 7.5%, with the existing terms providing for maturity in 115 months.
The government also reviews rates applicable to NSC, SCSS, Monthly Income Scheme and Post Office Time Deposits. For some of these products, the rate applicable to an account opened during a particular period can determine the return for the relevant investment tenure, making the quarterly announcement particularly important for new investors.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The Finance Ministry's official notification will provide the definitive rates for the October-December quarter. Until that announcement is issued, any expected hike or cut remains speculation.
For investors, the key factors to monitor will be the revised rates, the effective date, and the specific rules applicable to each savings product. The September 30 decision could therefore become an important update for households planning long-term, government-backed savings and fixed-income investments.
