Tawang, the scenic Himalayan town in Arunachal Pradesh, is preparing to host a major international tourism event later this month. The 14th edition of the International Tourism Mart (ITM) is scheduled to take place from October 27 to November 1, 2026, bringing together tourism representatives, industry professionals and delegates from several countries.
One notable development is that China is among the countries invited to participate. The invitation comes despite the longstanding boundary disagreement between India and China over Arunachal Pradesh, adding a diplomatic dimension to an event primarily focused on tourism promotion.
The conference is being organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Arunachal Pradesh government. More than 20 countries are expected to receive invitations, with the event aimed at presenting the Northeast as a destination for international travellers and tourism investment. <Cite refs={["turn887613search0","turn887613search1"]}/>
Why Was Tawang Selected as the Venue?
Tawang holds an important place in Arunachal Pradesh’s cultural and tourism landscape. Located in the western part of the state, the town is known for its Himalayan scenery, Buddhist heritage and distinctive Monpa culture.
The region is home to the historic Tawang Monastery, a major centre of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most recognised landmarks in the Northeast. Mountain passes, lakes and traditional settlements also contribute to its tourism appeal.
By hosting the international gathering in Tawang, the government intends to give overseas tourism representatives a closer look at the region’s natural attractions, cultural traditions and opportunities for sustainable travel. <Cite refs={["turn887613search2","turn887613search1"]}/>
China’s Invitation Amid the Border Disagreement
China’s inclusion among the invited countries has attracted attention because Beijing continues to claim Arunachal Pradesh as part of what it calls “South Tibet”. India has consistently rejected this position and maintains that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the country.
The tourism invitation does not change either country’s stated position on the boundary issue. Instead, it places the event within a broader context of diplomatic and people-to-people engagement.
The development also follows recent high-level discussions between the two countries, during which their leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in border areas while continuing communication on bilateral issues. <Cite refs={["turn887613search4","turn887613search0"]}/>
What Will International Delegates Experience?
The programme is expected to include visits to prominent attractions in and around Tawang. These include Tawang Monastery, Buddha Park, Panga Teng Tso Lake and Shernub village.
Such visits are intended to introduce delegates to the region’s religious heritage, landscapes and local communities. The event is also expected to bring together tourism officials, travel operators, investors and media representatives to discuss partnerships and opportunities for the sector.
Preparations have included reviews of accommodation, transportation, security and event facilities to support the expected international participation. <Cite refs={["turn887613search1","turn887613news6"]}/>
A Platform to Promote Northeast Tourism
The International Tourism Mart is designed to connect tourism businesses and stakeholders from the Northeast with domestic and international markets. Its focus includes cultural tourism, adventure travel, eco-tourism and investment opportunities.
For Arunachal Pradesh, hosting the event provides an opportunity to highlight destinations that remain less familiar to many international visitors. It may also help local businesses, guides and hospitality operators connect with wider tourism networks.
Tourism and Diplomacy Share the Spotlight
The Tawang event is primarily a tourism initiative, but the invitation to China has added wider interest to its preparations. Its significance will depend on participation, discussions and the partnerships that emerge from the gathering.
For the Northeast, the immediate objective is to showcase its landscapes, heritage and tourism potential. For Tawang, the event offers an opportunity to welcome international attention while placing the region’s cultural identity at the centre of a global tourism conversation.
