UPI Payment Fails at Singapore Airport: What Indian Travellers Should Know About Using UPI Abroad

UPI Payment Fails at Singapore Airport: What Indian Travellers Should Know About Using UPI Abroad

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded beyond domestic transactions, allowing users to make QR-based payments at selected merchants in several countries. However, a recent incident at Singapore’s Changi Airport has highlighted that international UPI payments may not work as reliably as they do in India.

An Indian traveller, Nikhil George, shared a video of his unsuccessful payment attempt at The Cocoa Trees outlet in Changi Airport. After scanning the merchant’s QR code through Google Pay, the transaction could not be completed. The app displayed an error stating that it could not retrieve the currency conversion rate and asked him to scan again.

The incident has renewed discussion about the gap between international payment availability and its actual reliability at individual locations. <Cite refs={["turn192327search5"]}/>

Why Did the UPI Payment Fail?

According to George’s post, the cashier had warned him that UPI payments rarely worked at the outlet. He nevertheless tried scanning the QR code, but the payment failed before completion.

The exact technical reason behind the error has not been confirmed. However, international UPI transactions involve more than simply scanning a QR code. The payment must be supported by the merchant, the payment network, the user’s bank and the app being used. Currency conversion and bank-related charges may also apply.

As a result, a QR code displayed at an overseas shop does not automatically guarantee that every Indian UPI app or bank account will be able to process the payment.

Is UPI Available in Singapore?

Yes. UPI-based international payments are supported in Singapore through the cross-border payment connection between India’s UPI system and Singapore’s PayNow network. Indian users can also make QR payments at participating merchants where the relevant international payment arrangement is available.

However, acceptance is not universal. The facility depends on participating merchants and supported banks or payment applications. Travellers should therefore avoid assuming that UPI will work at every shop, restaurant or airport outlet. <Cite refs={["turn192327search7","turn192327search8"]}/>

How to Activate UPI International on Google Pay

Google Pay provides an option to enable UPI International for eligible bank accounts. Users can generally activate it while scanning a supported international merchant QR code.

The process involves opening Google Pay, scanning the merchant’s QR code, entering the amount in the local currency and selecting an eligible bank account. The app may then display an option to activate international payments.

Google states that the facility is available for a limited period after activation and can be enabled again when needed. Users should check whether their bank account supports the service and review applicable currency-conversion charges before making a payment. <Cite refs={["turn192327search6"]}/>

Why Travellers Should Keep an Alternative Payment Method

The Singapore incident shows why relying exclusively on UPI during an overseas trip can create inconvenience. Payment failures may occur because of merchant limitations, technical issues, connectivity problems or currency-conversion errors.

Travellers should carry an alternative payment method, such as an eligible international card, and keep some local currency for situations where digital payments are unavailable. It is also sensible to check foreign transaction fees and inform the bank about overseas usage where required.

UPI’s Global Growth Still Faces Practical Challenges

UPI’s international expansion is an important development in India’s digital payments journey. Its connection with payment systems in other countries can make transactions more convenient for Indian travellers.

Yet the experience at Changi Airport highlights an important distinction: international availability does not always mean consistent acceptance at every merchant. Wider participation, reliable technical integration and clear information for customers will be essential to make cross-border QR payments more dependable.

For now, UPI can be a useful payment option abroad—but travellers should treat it as one of several ways to pay, rather than their only source of payment.
