In India, sports entrepreneurship is increasingly moving beyond the traditional model of coaching individual athletes. The emergence of structured academies, professional training programs and athlete-development ecosystems is creating new pathways for young people to pursue sports seriously. Among the entrepreneurs contributing to this shift is Kunal Dilip Dere, Founder of Kunal Dere Sports Academy (KDSA) in Mumbai.

With 25 years of professional experience and an early background as a state-level Table Tennis player, Dere’s journey represents a transition from corporate life to sports entrepreneurship. His story is shaped by resilience, reinvention and a long-standing belief that sport can contribute to much more than competitive performance.

From Competitive Sport to Entrepreneurship

Sports became an important part of Kunal Dere’s life from an early age. According to his professional profile, he began playing Table Tennis at the age of 10 and went on to compete at the state level.

His early sporting experience helped develop qualities such as discipline, determination, consistency and performance orientation. He also received the “Certified Student of the Year” recognition during his school years.

Dere studied at St. Sebastian Goan High School and later pursued his education through Mumbai University.

However, his initial professional career took him into the corporate sector, where he spent more than two decades building professional experience. His eventual transition into entrepreneurship came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he lost his corporate job.

Rather than viewing the setback as the end of his professional journey, Dere returned to the field that had remained closely connected to his identity—sports.

The Birth of Kunal Dere Sports Academy

In 2021, Dere founded Kunal Dere Sports Academy (KDSA) in Mumbai.

The academy initially began with a focus on Table Tennis coaching but subsequently expanded into a multi-sport training and development platform. Its offerings now include disciplines such as Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket and Football, alongside other sports and fitness-oriented programs.

Today, KDSA has developed a network of 25+ trainers and has trained more than 1,000 students across Mumbai.

The academy’s objective extends beyond teaching sporting techniques. Its training philosophy focuses on developing discipline, confidence, teamwork, leadership and character while helping athletes improve their sporting abilities.

A Multi-Sport Approach to Athlete Development

KDSA operates across multiple areas of sports training, including professional sports coaching, personal coaching, school sports programs, society sports training, multi-sport training, fitness and Zumba programs, sports tournaments and corporate sports events.

The academy’s approach is built around experienced and qualified trainers working with athletes across different age groups and skill levels.

For Dere, professional sports training is not simply about winning competitions. It is also about creating an environment where young athletes can learn how to handle pressure, remain disciplined and develop the confidence required both on and off the field.

This broader approach places athlete development at the centre of KDSA’s model.

Creating Opportunities Through Sport

One of the most significant aspects of Kunal Dere’s vision is the social dimension of sports.

His stated mission includes creating opportunities for children from different backgrounds, particularly those from underprivileged communities, to discover their sporting potential and explore pathways towards professional careers.

The philosophy is based on the belief that access to structured sports training should not be restricted by a child’s background.

“Every child deserves a chance to shine, regardless of their background.”

Through this vision, KDSA seeks to position sports as a platform for personal development as well as a potential professional pathway for talented young athletes.

Leadership Built on Discipline and Integrity

Dere’s leadership philosophy reflects many of the principles he developed through his own sporting and corporate experiences.

He emphasizes integrity, discipline, respect, commitment, teamwork, consistency and perseverance as important values for both athletes and coaches.

His approach to leadership is based on leading by example, listening to the team, communicating clearly and taking responsibility.

For Dere, successful leadership in sports cannot be measured only by victories. It also involves developing people, building character and creating an environment where athletes and coaches feel valued and supported.

Recognition for Contributions to Sports

Kunal Dere and Kunal Dere Sports Academy have also received recognition for their work in sports training and development.

Among the recognitions highlighted in the supplied profile are Best School Sports Excellence Award – 2026, Excellence in Table Tennis Coaching – 2026, Best Sports Academy of the Year – 2026 and Maharashtra Udyog Ratna Puraskar – 2026.

Dere has also been featured as a South Mumbai District Table Tennis Coordinator and received a Certificate of Honour from the Mumbai Sports Trainers Federation in recognition of his contribution as a committee member, dated February 23, 2026.

KDSA has additionally received recognition associated with the C Ward Khel Mahotsav, while the academy’s website material highlights a Justdial Users’ Choice 2025 recognition.

The academy also showcases sports partnerships and collaborations involving organizations including Decathlon Sports India, The Champion Sports and Caxton Sports.

Building a Larger Sports Ecosystem

Dere’s ambitions extend beyond Mumbai.

His Vision 2030 for Kunal Dere Sports Academy includes training 100,000+ students, building a network of 100+ trainers, expanding operations across India and establishing KDSA among India’s leading sports academies.

Another central objective is to create stronger pathways for underprivileged children to pursue professional careers in sports.

This means the long-term vision is not simply about opening more training centres. It is about developing a scalable sports ecosystem capable of identifying talent, providing structured training and supporting young athletes over the course of their development.

From Setback to Sports Entrepreneurship

Kunal Dere’s journey demonstrates how a professional setback can become an opportunity for reinvention.

After more than two decades in the corporate sector, losing his job during the pandemic could have marked an uncertain period in his career. Instead, he leveraged his sporting background and transformed his experience into an entrepreneurial venture.

Four years after establishing KDSA, the academy has grown into a multi-sport training platform with 25+ trainers and more than 1,000 students trained across Mumbai.

For Dere, however, the larger measure of success appears to be the opportunities created for the next generation.

His journey from a state-level Table Tennis player to sports entrepreneur reflects a simple but powerful idea: sport can build not only champions, but disciplined, confident and capable individuals.

With Kunal Dere Sports Academy, he is now working to make that philosophy accessible to a much larger community of aspiring athletes across India.
