Bodies of Three Keralites Killed in Germany Apartment Fire Brought Home

The mortal remains of three people from Kerala who died in a residential building fire in Bochum, Germany, have been brought back to their home state. The bodies arrived in Kerala on Friday, October 23, bringing an end to days of uncertainty for their grieving families as they prepared for the final rites.

The deceased were identified as Sivin Johny, 26, from Kalady in Ernakulam district; Nova Sabu, 25, from Kattappana in Idukki district; and Anjali Sheela Joy, 27, from Chemmakkad in Kollam district.

The three died in a fire that broke out at a residential building in Bochum last week. Their deaths have deeply affected their families and communities, particularly because all three had travelled to Germany for work, education or better career opportunities.

Bodies Arrive at Cochin International Airport

Officials confirmed that the bodies of Sivin Johny and Anjali Sheela Joy arrived at Cochin International Airport early Friday morning. Relatives and public representatives received the remains before they were transported by ambulance to their respective hometowns.

Sivin's body was taken to a hospital in Aluva to complete the necessary formalities. It was subsequently moved to his residence in Manickamangalam, near Kalady. Family members said funeral prayers began at his home at 2 pm, followed by burial at St Rocky's Church in Manickamangalam.

Anjali's remains were also taken to her hometown after the required procedures were completed.

Nova Sabu's body arrived on a separate flight later in the day, reaching the airport by approximately 8.40 pm. After the formalities were completed, her remains were handed over to relatives for transportation to her native place in Idukki district.

Kerala Government Coordinates Repatriation

The return of the three bodies involved coordination between the Kerala government, officials at the Indian Embassy in Germany and NORKA Roots, the state agency responsible for supporting non-resident Keralites.

Chief Minister VD Satheesan had earlier announced that the state government would cover the expenses associated with bringing the victims' remains back to Kerala.

Public representatives and relatives had also contacted the authorities to help expedite the necessary procedures. Members of the Malayali community in Germany offered assistance to the affected families during the difficult period.

The repatriation process required the completion of official documentation and coordination with the relevant authorities in Germany and India.

What Happened in Bochum?

The fatal fire occurred in the early hours of October 13 at a residential building in Bochum, a city in western Germany. Emergency services responded to the incident, but firefighters later discovered the three victims inside an apartment on the building's second floor.

Five other occupants were reported injured and taken to hospitals for medical treatment.

German investigators suspected that the fire had been deliberately started rather than caused by a technical fault. Authorities arrested a 41-year-old Romanian national who lived in the same building on suspicion of murder.

Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the blaze, including how the fire spread through the building and whether earlier disagreements among residents were connected to the incident. The allegations remained subject to investigation, and the suspect's arrest did not establish guilt.

Families Prepare for Final Rites

The return of the victims' remains has allowed their relatives to bring them home and proceed with funeral arrangements. Their deaths have also renewed attention on the difficulties faced by Indian nationals living abroad, particularly when emergencies require urgent coordination across international borders.

For the families of Sivin, Nova and Anjali, the immediate priority is to complete the final rites and mourn their loved ones.

The Kerala government's assistance, together with the efforts of officials and community members, helped facilitate the return of all three bodies. Meanwhile, German authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the apartment fire.
