BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Becomes First Production Car to Cross 500 kmph, Sets 503.17 kmph Record

China’s electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has achieved a major milestone in automotive engineering, with its luxury performance brand Yangwang setting a new speed record for production cars. The all-electric Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached a top speed of 503.17 kmph (312.65 mph) during a high-speed run in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first production car to cross the 500 kmph threshold.

The record-breaking attempt took place on November 1, 2026, on a closed section of the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road, also known as the E11 highway, in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region. German racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel during the run.

The achievement was subsequently recognised by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Guinness World Records, marking a significant development in the performance capabilities of electric vehicles.

Yangwang U9 Xtreme Breaks Its Previous Speed Record

The latest achievement improves on the Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s previous top-speed benchmark of 496.22 kmph, recorded in September 2025 at the ATP Papenburg testing facility in Germany.

The new speed represents an increase of nearly 7 kmph, pushing the electric hypercar beyond a threshold that has challenged automotive manufacturers for decades.

At 503.17 kmph, the vehicle travels almost 140 metres every second. Maintaining stability at such speeds requires careful coordination between the powertrain, tyres, suspension, aerodynamics and braking systems.

Unlike a conventional test-track attempt, the Abu Dhabi run took place on a specially secured road section. Engineers had to account for conditions including high temperatures, crosswinds and desert dust while preparing the car for the record attempt.

According to the FIA, the run established records for the highest speed achieved by a production car in a single-direction run and the highest speed achieved by an electric production car in the same category. These records are specifically based on a single-direction run rather than the average of runs in opposite directions.

Four Electric Motors Deliver Nearly 3,000 Horsepower

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme combines an advanced electric powertrain with specialised performance technology designed for extreme speeds.

The car uses a 1,200-volt electrical architecture and four independent electric motors. Its combined output is reported at 2,220 kW, equivalent to approximately 2,977 horsepower.

The four-motor arrangement enables precise control of power delivery to individual wheels. Its torque-vectoring system can rapidly adjust the distribution of driving force to help maintain traction and stability.

The vehicle also features a sophisticated suspension system, high-performance tyres and enhanced cooling technology. These systems are particularly important during sustained high-speed driving, when heat, aerodynamic forces and tyre loads can become significant engineering challenges.

The car’s aerodynamic package includes a prominent front splitter, a rear diffuser and a large rear wing designed to improve stability at high speeds. Engineers also adjusted aerodynamic settings, suspension software and tyre pressures ahead of the record-setting run.

Limited Production Makes the Hypercar Exclusive

Despite its record-breaking performance, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme will remain an exclusive vehicle. BYD has indicated that production will be limited to no more than 30 units worldwide.

The model builds on the development of the original Yangwang U9, which first demonstrated its high-speed capabilities in 2024. Subsequent testing pushed the car through progressively higher speed benchmarks before the Xtreme version crossed 500 kmph.

The U9 Xtreme has also demonstrated its performance on Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, recording a lap time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds. That result established a production-electric-vehicle lap record at the challenging circuit.

What the Record Means for Electric Cars

The achievement highlights how electric powertrains are expanding the boundaries of high-performance motoring. Electric vehicles can deliver rapid power response and precise torque control, while advances in batteries, thermal management and vehicle electronics are helping manufacturers explore increasingly demanding performance targets.

However, reaching more than 500 kmph is a specialised engineering accomplishment and does not necessarily reflect the everyday driving range, charging speed or efficiency of a vehicle.

For BYD, the record offers a high-profile demonstration of its engineering capabilities through Yangwang, its luxury performance brand. The achievement also intensifies competition among manufacturers seeking to establish themselves in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s 503.17 kmph run marks a notable moment in automotive history. By taking an electric production car beyond the 500 kmph barrier, BYD has set a new benchmark for
