Cricket Fraternity Pays Emotional Tribute to Mohammed Shami After Test Retirement

India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has brought his 13-year Test career to an end, prompting heartfelt tributes from former teammates, cricket commentators and Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. The 36-year-old leaves the longest format with an impressive record of 229 wickets in 64 Tests, having established himself as one of India’s most reliable pace bowlers across challenging conditions.

Shami announced his retirement on November 6, 2026, the same date on which he made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in 2013. In an emotional message, he reflected on the experiences, challenges and comebacks that shaped his journey in the longest format.

The announcement marks the end of his international Test career, but not his time in professional cricket. Shami has indicated that he intends to continue playing white-ball cricket, including the IPL and domestic competitions.

BCCI Thanks Shami for His Contribution to Indian Cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid tribute to Shami, acknowledging his contribution to an important era of Indian fast bowling.

The board described him as a bowler who helped define an era and highlighted his distinction as India’s 279th Test player. It also invited fans to share their favourite memories of the pacer in the white jersey.

Shami’s ability to extract movement off the pitch, generate reverse swing and maintain pressure on batters made him a key component of India’s bowling attack. His performances in overseas conditions, particularly in Australia and South Africa, strengthened his reputation as a dependable match-winner.

His career also demonstrated remarkable resilience, as he repeatedly returned from injuries to deliver important performances for India.

Harsha Bhogle Praises Shami’s Mastery of Seam Bowling

Veteran cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle offered an emotional tribute, focusing on Shami’s technical skill and his ability to change the course of a match.

Bhogle praised the fast bowler’s control over the seam and his knack for producing movement even when a game appeared to be losing momentum. He highlighted how Shami could trouble batters with deliveries that moved sharply either towards or away from them.

According to Bhogle, Shami’s command of traditional seam and swing bowling made him a special presence in Test cricket. He also expressed hope that the pacer would pass on his knowledge and experience to younger bowlers.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan similarly praised Shami’s ability to generate late movement with the red ball, saying that skill would be missed in the longest format.

Former pacer Munaf Patel congratulated Shami on his achievements and expressed hope that fans would continue to see him represent India in limited-overs cricket.

Former Teammates and IPL Franchises Join the Tributes

Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan and batter Ajinkya Rahane also congratulated Shami on his distinguished career.

Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary, who had the opportunity to lead Shami in domestic cricket, described him as a warrior. Tiwary reflected on the memories of having the fast bowler in his team and praised the impact he made with the ball.

IPL franchises also acknowledged Shami’s contribution to the game. Punjab Kings highlighted his distinctive seam position and ability to make the red ball move, while Lucknow Super Giants celebrated his memorable performances and expressed appreciation for his time in the format.

Chennai Super Kings also recognised his achievements, pointing to his 64 Tests, 122 innings and 229 wickets as evidence of his contribution to Indian cricket.

The messages collectively reflected the respect Shami earned among teammates, opponents and supporters through his performances and perseverance.

Shami Leaves Behind a Lasting Test Legacy

Shami finished his Test career with 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls. His best figures in an innings were 6/56, while his ability to reverse-swing the older ball proved especially valuable in demanding conditions.

His final Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. Injuries and fitness concerns subsequently disrupted his international career, although he continued participating in domestic cricket and the IPL.

Shami has also confirmed that he is not retiring from cricket altogether. He plans to remain active in white-ball formats and is open to playing multi-day domestic matches when required to maintain his fitness.

As tributes continue to pour in, Shami’s retirement closes a significant chapter in Indian Test cricket. His pace, seam movement and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs have left a lasting impression, while his continued involvement in the game offers fans the prospect of seeing more of him in the years ahead.
