Indian hockey forward Mandeep Singh has made it clear that he has no immediate plans to retire, setting his sights on representing the country at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The 31-year-old delivered a memorable response to speculation about his future by scoring a hat-trick in India’s emphatic 13-0 victory over Bangladesh in the opening match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2026 in Jalandhar.
Mandeep’s performance came amid reports that several senior members of the Indian men’s hockey team could be nearing the end of their international careers. However, the forward said he remained focused on maintaining his fitness and contributing to the national side.
Mandeep’s Hat-Trick Leads India’s Dominant Start
India began their title defence in commanding fashion at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium on October 27. Mandeep scored in the third, 10th and 54th minutes to complete his hat-trick and help the hosts register a 13-goal victory.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Hardik Singh scored twice each. Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Nilakanta Sharma and Jugraj Singh also found the net.
Mandeep contributed beyond his three goals, helping create attacking opportunities and supporting the team's forward combinations. His display was particularly significant because the tournament had become a focus of discussion about the future of some experienced Indian players.
Retirement Reports Leave Senior Players in the Spotlight
Before the competition, reports suggested that Mandeep, defender Amit Rohidas, Jarmanpreet Singh and midfielder Nilakanta Sharma could be playing their final tournament for India.
The speculation generated uncertainty among supporters and reportedly surprised some of the players. Nilakanta subsequently confirmed that the Asian Champions Trophy would be his final assignment in international hockey.
Mandeep and Jarmanpreet, however, indicated that they wanted to continue. Head coach Craig Fulton also declined to dwell on retirement discussions, stressing that selection and on-field performances were the immediate priorities.
Fulton said the situation had already been addressed and that the team needed to concentrate on the competition rather than speculation.
Los Angeles Olympics Remain Mandeep’s Target
Speaking after the Bangladesh match, Mandeep rejected the suggestion that he was preparing to step away from international hockey. He said he had not understood where the retirement reports had originated and reiterated that his ambition was to remain part of India's plans for the Los Angeles Olympics.
The forward explained that fitness would be central to achieving that goal. He also emphasised that the hat-trick was a product of teamwork rather than an individual achievement.
Mandeep highlighted the understanding among India's attacking players, saying that creating opportunities, earning penalty corners and providing assists were as important as scoring goals.
The striker has represented India for around 14 years and has accumulated more than 300 international appearances. His experience remains valuable as the team combines established players with younger attacking options.
Punjab Homecoming Adds to the Occasion
The tournament also carried special significance for Mandeep, who comes from Jalandhar and began his hockey journey at the Surjit Singh Hockey Academy. Playing an international competition in front of family members and local supporters made the occasion particularly meaningful.
The Asian Champions Trophy marked the return of international hockey to Punjab after a long gap. The opening ceremony featured traditional Punjabi performances and celebrations before India began their campaign with a comprehensive win.
For Mandeep, the immediate priority is to maintain his form and fitness throughout the tournament. His hat-trick has provided a strong statement about his current contribution, while his stated ambition of reaching the 2028 Olympics gives a clear direction to his plans.
India's focus now shifts to the remaining group-stage matches as they pursue another Asian Champions Trophy title.
