Diljit Dosanjh Responds to Critics at Delhi Concert as Abhijeet Dipke Seeks to End Dispute

Diljit Dosanjh Responds to Critics at Delhi Concert as Abhijeet Dipke Seeks to End Dispute

Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh addressed a controversy surrounding his earlier comments on student protests during a concert in New Delhi, delivering an indirect response to critics who had questioned his position on public issues. The remarks prompted Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), to share a conciliatory message expressing continued admiration for the performer.

The exchange took place during the opening show of Dosanjh's Aura India Tour 2026 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday, October 30. While entertaining the audience with popular songs, the singer briefly turned to the disagreement that had followed his earlier statement that he was an artist rather than a politician.

Diljit Says Punjabis Do Not Need Lessons on Fighting for Causes

During the performance, Dosanjh told the audience that he cared about his supporters and wanted to remain focused on his work as an artist. He also delivered a pointed message in Punjabi, saying that people should not teach Punjabis how to fight their battles.

Although he did not directly name Dipke or the organisation, his comments were widely interpreted as a response to the criticism he had faced in recent months.

The singer also referred to his film Satluj, which is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. He said that considerable effort had gone into the project and objected to comments made about the film during a protest gathering.

Dosanjh maintained that he continued to support people while making it clear that he did not want to be drawn into every political disagreement.

How the Disagreement Began

The dispute dates back to June, when Dosanjh was asked during an Instagram Live session about student demonstrations in Delhi concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process.

Responding to the question, the singer said that he was an artist, not a politician, and wanted to stay away from protests and political matters. His remarks attracted criticism from some activists and social media users who expected him to speak more directly about the students' concerns.

Dipke was among those who questioned the singer's response. He reportedly argued that Dosanjh's association with socially and politically significant projects made his decision to distance himself from the demonstrations disappointing.

The criticism also drew attention to the contrast between the singer's earlier public support for farmers during the 2020 agricultural protests and his response to the student demonstrations.

Abhijeet Dipke Shares a Conciliatory Message

Following the Delhi concert, Dipke posted a message addressed to Dosanjh on Instagram. He acknowledged that the singer's earlier comments had hurt him, particularly because he had long admired Dosanjh for his artistic work and public image.

Dipke clarified that his criticism was not driven by personal hostility. He said he continued to listen to the singer's music and recalled attending his Chicago concert in May.

He also praised Dosanjh for taking Punjabi music and Indian culture to international audiences while maintaining a connection with his roots.

In his message, Dipke suggested that one disagreement should not damage the respect between them. He ended with the Punjabi expression "chhota bhai samajh ke mitti pao", asking the singer to consider him a younger brother and let the matter rest.

Concert Highlights the Wider Debate

The exchange has renewed discussion about the expectations placed on public figures when social and political controversies emerge. While some fans expect artists to use their visibility to support public causes, others believe performers should be free to maintain boundaries between their professional work and political engagement.

The concert also featured a visual display carrying the phrases "Main Hoon Punjab" and "I'm an artist", reinforcing the themes Dosanjh addressed during the performance.

Neither side announced a formal resolution, but Dipke's message indicated a willingness to move beyond the disagreement. The episode has placed the spotlight once again on the relationship between artistic identity, public responsibility and freedom of expression.
