iPhone Duo at ₹2.99 Lakh: Five Things Indian Buyers Should Know Before Purchasing Apple’s First Foldable Phone

iPhone Duo at ₹2.99 Lakh: Five Things Indian Buyers Should Know Before Purchasing Apple’s First Foldable Phone

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has entered the Indian market with a starting price of ₹2,99,900, placing it among the most expensive smartphones available in the country. The device combines a compact outer display with a larger folding screen, introducing a new design to Apple’s smartphone lineup.

However, its premium price means prospective buyers need to consider more than its innovative design. Camera capabilities, biometric authentication, battery performance, app compatibility and potential repair expenses are all important factors before making a purchase.

1. A Large Foldable Display in a Compact Design

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display that unfolds into a 7.6-inch inner screen. Both displays support a 120Hz refresh rate, designed to provide smoother scrolling, animations and interactions.

The larger screen could be useful for reading, watching videos, multitasking and working across compatible applications. Its folding design also allows users to carry a relatively compact device and open it when more screen space is needed.

Apple has redesigned the software experience to accommodate the changing screen size and different folding positions. However, not every application may be fully optimised for the larger display, meaning the experience could vary depending on the apps a person regularly uses.

2. Premium Pricing Across Four Storage Options

The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 for the 256GB variant. Buyers who require additional storage will need to pay considerably more.

The available configurations are priced as follows:

  • 256GB: ₹2,99,900
  • 512GB: ₹3,24,900
  • 1TB: ₹3,74,900
  • 2TB: ₹4,49,900

The difference between the base model and the top-end version is ₹1.5 lakh. Buyers should therefore consider their actual storage requirements before choosing a configuration.

At this price level, it is also worth comparing the foldable device with conventional flagship smartphones that may offer different camera features or a lower purchase cost.

3. Camera Features Come With Some Trade-Offs

The iPhone Duo features a dual-camera system built around two 48-megapixel sensors: a main camera and an ultra-wide camera.

The system is designed to support detailed photographs, wide-angle images and advanced computational photography features. The foldable design also enables users to preview photographs on the outer display while using the rear cameras to take pictures.

However, the phone does not include a dedicated telephoto camera of the kind found on some premium conventional smartphones. Buyers who frequently photograph distant subjects should consider this difference when comparing camera systems.

The device supports high-resolution video recording, including 4K video at up to 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision, offering additional flexibility for compatible recording modes.

4. Touch ID Replaces Face ID

One significant change is the use of Touch ID instead of Face ID. Fingerprint authentication is integrated into the side button, allowing users to unlock the phone and authenticate supported actions using their fingerprint.

People accustomed to Apple's facial-recognition system may need time to adjust to the alternative approach. Fingerprint registration and the convenience of reaching the side button are worth considering before purchasing the device.

The phone also features an A20 Pro processor, intended to deliver high performance across everyday applications, gaming and demanding workloads.

5. Battery Life and Repair Costs Deserve Attention

Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display and up to 44 hours with the outer display. Actual battery life will depend on usage patterns, brightness, connectivity and the applications running on the device.

The phone carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Nevertheless, buyers should not assume that this makes the folding mechanism immune to damage or eliminates the need for careful handling.

A foldable smartphone has a more complex physical structure than a conventional handset. Potential repair expenses, warranty coverage and the availability of authorised servicing are therefore important considerations, especially for a device costing nearly ₹3 lakh.

Is the iPhone Duo Worth Buying?

The iPhone Duo offers a distinctive folding design, a large inner display, a powerful processor and premium construction. It may appeal to people who specifically want a foldable iPhone and expect to make regular use of its larger screen.

However, the high price, lack of a dedicated telephoto camera, change from Face ID to Touch ID and potential maintenance costs deserve careful consideration.

For buyers who primarily need a reliable smartphone for photography, communication and everyday tasks, a conventional flagship may provide better value. The iPhone Duo makes the strongest case for itself when its folding design and expanded display experience are features the buyer genuinely needs.
