R Ashwin Names Five IPL Franchises Interested in Hardik Pandya, Picks KKR as Potential Destination

Speculation over Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians has intensified ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, with former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin identifying five franchises that could pursue the all-rounder in a possible trade.

According to Ashwin, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are the teams to watch. He also ruled out Lucknow Super Giants as a likely contender, disputing suggestions that as many as six franchises were interested in acquiring Pandya.

Hardik, who currently captains Mumbai Indians, has been linked with a potential departure following reports of discussions surrounding his future. However, no official trade agreement has been announced, and his next destination remains uncertain.

Ashwin Sees KKR as a Potential Fit

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin identified Kolkata Knight Riders as a possible destination where Pandya could have an opportunity to captain the team.

Ashwin suggested that KKR could explore player exchanges involving Harshit Rana or Rinku Singh. Varun Chakravarthy was another name discussed, although Ashwin expressed doubt that KKR would be willing to part with the spinner.

The prospect of Pandya joining KKR has attracted attention because of his experience as a captain and his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. His leadership record includes guiding Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and the final in 2023.

However, the possibility of a move to Kolkata remains speculative. Any deal would depend on negotiations between the franchises, their squad requirements and the terms of a potential exchange.

Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans Also in the Picture

Ashwin also discussed possible trade combinations involving Rajasthan Royals. He mentioned several players who could feature in hypothetical discussions, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sam Curran, Tushar Deshpande and Ravi Bishnoi.

These names were presented as possible trade scenarios rather than confirmed offers from the franchises.

Gujarat Titans could also emerge as an option. Ashwin suggested that Mumbai Indians might consider Rashid Khan in a potential exchange, pointing to the team's need to strengthen its bowling resources.

He also highlighted Mumbai’s requirement for an Indian wicketkeeper and improvements in its bowling attack. Such needs could influence the franchise's priorities if it decides to negotiate a deal involving its captain.

Punjab Kings were another franchise mentioned in the discussion, with Ashwin referring to possible interest in players such as Azmatullah Omarzai.

None of these proposed exchanges has been officially confirmed.

Is Captaincy Still a Priority for Hardik Pandya?

One of the key points in Ashwin’s assessment concerned Pandya’s potential expectations at a new franchise.

Reports had suggested that captaincy demands may have complicated a possible return to Gujarat Titans. Ashwin, however, believes the leadership role may no longer be a compulsory condition for the all-rounder.

He indicated that Pandya could prioritise finding a franchise that suits his cricketing needs rather than insisting on becoming captain.

That distinction could broaden his options, allowing interested teams to consider him primarily for his all-round abilities and experience rather than having to restructure their leadership arrangements.

Nevertheless, Pandya’s own preferences and the decisions of Mumbai Indians will ultimately determine whether a transfer takes place.

Mumbai Indians Yet to Confirm Any Trade

Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season and replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, a change that generated considerable debate among supporters.

The franchise's results under his leadership have added to discussions about its future direction. Mumbai reached the playoffs in 2025 but struggled during the 2026 campaign, prompting renewed scrutiny of its squad composition and leadership.

Despite the growing speculation, Mumbai Indians have not officially announced that Pandya will leave the team.

For now, Ashwin’s comments provide insight into possible destinations and trade scenarios ahead of IPL 2027, but they do not establish that negotiations have reached an agreement. The all-rounder’s future will become clearer only when the franchises confirm their plans.
