India batter Tilak Varma has revealed how a message from head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak helped him remain confident during a challenging run chase against New Zealand. The left-handed batter delivered a match-winning performance in the second T20 International in Christchurch, guiding India to a four-wicket victory with an unbeaten half-century.
Tilak scored 51 not out off just 26 deliveries as India chased a target of 181 with one ball remaining. His composure under pressure proved crucial after the visitors lost several wickets early and appeared to be struggling to stay in contention.
Speaking after receiving the Player of the Match award on October 24, Tilak credited the coaches for backing him before the game and encouraging him to take responsibility until the final stages of the chase.
Gambhir’s Message Gave Tilak Confidence
Tilak said he had spoken to Gambhir and Kotak before the match. Both coaches expressed their confidence in his ability to guide India to victory if he remained at the crease until the end.
The message stayed with him as he walked out to bat during a difficult phase of the innings. Rather than allowing the mounting required run rate to force him into risky shots, he concentrated on building partnerships and taking the contest deep.
The advice reflected a straightforward approach: preserve his wicket, assess the conditions and accelerate when opportunities emerged.
Tilak later explained that he was proud to have delivered on the confidence shown in him. His innings demonstrated the importance of maintaining a clear plan when a team is under pressure.
India Struggle After Losing Early Wickets
New Zealand posted 180 runs for five wickets after batting first. Glenn Phillips led the scoring with 70 runs off 43 balls, while Bevon Jacobs contributed 58 off 46 deliveries.
India’s chase, however, became difficult as wickets fell in quick succession. The visitors lost five wickets for around 70 runs, putting the team in a vulnerable position against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack.
The pressure increased as the required run rate climbed. India needed a substantial contribution from the remaining batters to keep the chase alive, and Tilak’s ability to combine controlled batting with timely attacking strokes became increasingly important.
Naman Dhir provided valuable support, scoring 31 runs from 17 balls. Their partnership helped India regain momentum before Dhir was dismissed.
Tilak and Nitish Kumar Reddy Complete the Chase
After Dhir’s departure, Nitish Kumar Reddy joined Tilak at the crease. The pair combined patience with aggressive stroke play, targeting scoring opportunities while ensuring that India remained within reach of the target.
Their unbeaten 69-run partnership from just 30 deliveries transformed the contest. Tilak finished with 51 not out from 26 balls, while Reddy remained unbeaten on 26 off 13 deliveries.
India reached 181 for six in 19.5 overs, completing a four-wicket win with one ball to spare.
Tilak also explained that he had urged Dhir to remain at the crease until the end. He believed the surface was slower than in the previous match, making quick running between the wickets especially important when facing the spinners.
The batters focused on rotating the strike and collecting twos before looking to attack the faster bowlers later in the innings.
India Take Control of the T20I Series
The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. It also highlighted the importance of contributions from players lower down the batting order when the top order fails to provide a strong foundation.
Captain Shreyas Iyer praised the character shown by Tilak and Reddy, while acknowledging Dhir’s contribution in keeping India’s hopes alive.
For Tilak, the match was a reminder of how confidence from the coaching staff can reinforce a player’s decision-making under pressure. Gambhir and Kotak’s advice gave him a clear objective, and his innings ultimately helped India secure a memorable comeback victory.
