Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing films such as Kaante, Kaabil and Shootout at Wadala, has died at the age of 57. His death was reported on October 31, 2026, prompting tributes from members of the Hindi film industry and audiences familiar with his distinctive approach to crime and action cinema.
According to reports, Gupta died on October 30 following a fall at his residence that caused a head injury. Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news through a social media tribute, describing him as a passionate filmmaker and a person full of life. Further details about the circumstances of his death and the arrangements for his last rites were awaited.
A Career That Began With Aatish
Gupta entered the world of film direction with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994. Starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi, the action drama introduced audiences to his preference for stylised sequences, forceful dialogue and stories built around crime and conflict.
He continued directing films such as Ram Shastra, Khauff and Jung, gradually developing a recognisable identity in mainstream Hindi cinema.
His filmmaking frequently explored the darker side of urban life, particularly Mumbai's underworld. High-contrast visuals, dramatic lighting, elaborate action sequences and a strong emphasis on sound became recurring features of his work.
Kaante Established His Reputation
One of Gupta's most recognised projects was Kaante, released in 2002. The crime thriller featured an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav.
Set largely in the United States, the film followed a group of criminals planning a major robbery. Its ensemble storytelling, gritty atmosphere and stylised presentation helped it develop a lasting following among fans of Hindi action cinema.
Gupta later continued working with Sanjay Dutt on projects including Musafir, Zinda and Shootout at Lokhandwala. Their professional association became one of the recurring partnerships in his filmography.
Shootout Films and Other Major Projects
Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) was another important title associated with Gupta. Although he was involved as a producer, the film was directed by Apoorva Lakhia. It drew inspiration from the 1991 police encounter at Mumbai's Lokhandwala Complex.
Gupta subsequently directed Shootout at Wadala in 2013, expanding the crime-film series with another story inspired by events involving Mumbai's underworld.
His work was not limited to gangster dramas. He directed Jazbaa (2015), featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Kaabil (2017), starring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. He also directed Mumbai Saga (2021), an action drama set against the changing landscape of Mumbai.
Through his production company, White Feather Films, Gupta also supported several projects across different genres.
His Later Work and Contribution to Hindi Cinema
Gupta remained active in filmmaking in recent years. His later projects included Vishfot (2024) and The Miranda Brothers (2025), demonstrating his continued interest in action-driven stories and dramatic narratives.
Before becoming a director, he gained experience in post-production and sound-related work and assisted filmmaker Pankaj Parashar. These early experiences contributed to his interest in the technical aspects of filmmaking.
His career spanned more than three decades, during which he developed a distinct visual identity and helped popularise a particular style of urban crime storytelling in Hindi cinema.
Tributes From the Film Industry
Following news of his death, colleagues and admirers began sharing messages remembering Gupta's contribution to the industry. Ashoke Pandit's tribute highlighted his storytelling ability, enthusiasm and dedication to filmmaking.
Gupta's body of work leaves behind several widely recognised titles that continue to feature in conversations about Bollywood's crime and action genres. His passing marks the loss of a filmmaker whose style remained identifiable across a long career in Hindi cinema.
