PM Narendra Modi Interacts With AI Avatar of Swami Chinmayananda at Delhi Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with an artificial intelligence-powered holographic representation of Swami Chinmayananda, the spiritual leader who died in 1993, during a major commemorative event in New Delhi on October 23. The unusual exchange brought together modern technology and India's spiritual heritage, as Modi recalled his final meeting with the revered teacher more than three decades ago.

The interaction took place at the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan at Bharat Mandapam. The three-day gathering, running from October 23 to 25, celebrates 75 years of the Chinmaya Mission, the spiritual organisation founded by Swami Chinmayananda to make the teachings of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita accessible to a wider audience.

During the exchange, Modi sought the spiritual leader's blessings for his future responsibilities. The AI-powered representation responded using technology designed to reproduce Chinmayananda's appearance, voice and conversational manner.

Modi Revisits His Meeting With Swami Chinmayananda in 1993

A central moment of the interaction came when Modi recalled meeting Swami Chinmayananda in Vadodara in February 1993. At the time, Modi had approached the spiritual leader to invite him to participate in the centenary celebrations of the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago.

The holographic representation referred to the earlier meeting and recalled the circumstances surrounding the invitation. The exchange recreated elements of their past conversation, allowing the Prime Minister to reflect on an encounter that took place shortly before Chinmayananda's death.

Swami Chinmayananda passed away on August 3, 1993, at the age of 77. His teachings continued to influence spiritual education and the work of the organisation he established.

Modi described seeing the holographic representation as an emotional experience, saying it made him feel as though he had travelled back 33 years. He also expressed gratitude to the organisers for creating an opportunity to revisit memories of the spiritual leader.

How the AI-Powered Hologram Worked

The presentation used holographic technology and artificial intelligence to create a digital representation capable of responding during a live interaction. The system was designed to reproduce the spiritual leader's voice and mannerisms while drawing on material associated with his life and teachings.

Unlike a conventional recorded video, the presentation allowed an exchange to unfold in response to questions and remarks. This made the demonstration a prominent feature of the summit.

However, the representation was a technological recreation rather than the spiritual leader himself. Its responses were generated through digital systems and should be understood in that context.

The presentation also highlighted the growing use of AI in cultural and educational settings, where digital representations can help audiences engage with historical figures, preserve memories and explore important intellectual traditions.

Summit Celebrates 75 Years of the Chinmaya Mission

The global summit marks the culmination of year-long celebrations commemorating the Chinmaya Mission's 75-year journey. Founded in 1951, the organisation has focused on sharing Vedanta philosophy and the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita through spiritual programmes, educational institutions and community initiatives.

More than 9,000 participants from India and abroad were expected to attend the three-day gathering. Its programme includes activities centred on spiritual learning, cultural preservation, youth participation and the organisation's contribution to society.

During his address, Modi highlighted the role of young people in carrying forward India's philosophical traditions. He recalled that his final conversation with Chinmayananda had focused on developing youth leadership and building a strong nation.

The Prime Minister also referred to the importance of combining modern education with knowledge of India's intellectual and cultural heritage.

Technology Brings New Attention to Spiritual Heritage

The interaction demonstrated how AI and holographic systems can create new ways to present historical personalities to contemporary audiences. Such applications may offer opportunities for educational exhibitions, cultural programmes and the preservation of historical material.

At the same time, recreating the voice and appearance of a deceased personality raises questions about authenticity, interpretation and the distinction between recorded historical material and AI-generated responses.

For the Chinmaya Mission, the event provided an opportunity to commemorate its founder while presenting his legacy through contemporary technology. For attendees, the exchange offered a different way to revisit the life and teachings of a spiritual leader whose influence has continued long after his death.
