Salman Khan Announces December 4 Release for ‘Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace’

Salman Khan Announces December 4 Release for ‘Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace’

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has announced that his much-delayed war drama, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, will arrive in cinemas on December 4, 2026. The announcement was made at the film’s promotional event in Mumbai on Friday, November 6, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the project’s theatrical release.

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film is inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops. Salman plays Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, the Indian Army officer who led his troops during the confrontation in eastern Ladakh.

The film was initially announced under the title Battle of Galwan before being renamed Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace. Its release was postponed several times as the makers worked to complete the project and secure the necessary clearances.

Salman Khan Explains Why the Film Was Delayed

Speaking about the repeated changes to the release schedule, Salman said the team wanted to ensure that the film’s visual effects met the highest possible standards.

He explained that modern audiences can closely examine individual shots, making it important for the filmmakers to deliver a visually convincing cinematic experience.

The actor said the team had initially expected to complete the project within 45 to 50 days. However, an injury suffered by co-star Chitrangda Singh affected the production timeline and required additional time for recovery.

The film was earlier expected to release in January or June before being pushed to August. The latest announcement has now set December 4 as its theatrical release date.

Salman also dismissed speculation that government pressure was responsible for the delays, attributing the extended timeline to production requirements and the effort to improve the film’s final presentation.

Film Draws Inspiration From the 2020 Galwan Valley Clash

Maatrubhumi centres on the confrontation between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020. The clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian Army personnel and significantly strained relations between the two countries.

Salman portrays Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his bravery.

The film also stars Chitrangda Singh in a prominent role, alongside actors including Mukesh Rishi, Ankur Bhatia, Zeyn Shaw and Abhilash Chaudhary.

While the story is rooted in a military confrontation, the makers have indicated that the film will also explore sacrifice, family, humanity and the emotional consequences of war.

The revised title, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, reflects an emphasis on the human cost of conflict rather than solely on battlefield action.

From ‘Battle of Galwan’ to ‘Maatrubhumi’

The change in title marked a significant development in the film’s journey to the big screen. Initially promoted as Battle of Galwan, the project attracted attention because of its subject and the sensitivities surrounding the India-China confrontation.

The film also underwent changes in its production and presentation as the makers worked towards completing it. These developments contributed to uncertainty over when audiences would finally be able to watch it in theatres.

The new title signals a broader approach to the story, placing greater emphasis on the consequences of war and the experiences of those affected by it.

December Release Raises Expectations

With December 4 now announced as the release date, expectations are building around Salman Khan’s return to the big screen in a military drama.

The film brings together a real-life military episode, a prominent Bollywood star and a director known for action-oriented storytelling. Its reception will depend on how effectively it balances historical events, dramatic storytelling and the personal experiences of soldiers and their families.

For Salman, Maatrubhumi represents a major project that has undergone a prolonged journey from its original announcement to its scheduled theatrical debut. The December release will finally give audiences an opportunity to see how the filmmakers have brought the story of the Galwan Valley clash to the screen.
